Been having a strange occurance the past few weeks. When I'm going down the road accelerating or coasting occasionally I get a high pitched squeal that seems like its coming from the front end.

However, the noise stops when I apply the brakes. Then if I continue to coast more, the noise will come back.

It doesn't do it all the time. Probably about once a day, every other day or so.

Any ideas?

If it only happens when you're moving, my guess is that its sticky calipers. Lube the sliders and make sure the anti chatter clips are clean. Seems like I have to do this at least once a year.

It sounds like the wear tabs on your brake pads might be contacting the rotors. They're designed to do this when your pads are getting worn out. You might want to get on this before you have to replace the rotors as well as the pads.

Berner , The wear indicators would squeal when he applied the brakes , not when they are released... Sounds like a caliper starting to stick to me.

On a side note , my dad (who never really ever works on his own vehicles) had a squeal in the brakes when they were applied , the shop told him not to worry about it, i pulled the front wheel off , and the pads were just about worn through to the steel backing pad...

Well, I do know for a fact that I have brand new brake pads all around. I had the local brake shop see if they could find the problem a few days ago.

Last time I had problems with squealing on my 95 it cost me a lot of money because my brake pads were worn so bad that they caused me to have to replace the rotors.

But they did tell me my pads were almost brand new and my rotors looked great.

I'm going to investigate the sticky caliper issue further.

El'cheapo brake pads can cause this too. I've had really good luck with the Mopar V line pads at work.

I found a skewed wear tab on one pad in a GMC 1/2 ton about 10 years ago that squealed only when the brakes weren't applied. Straightening the tab out cured the problem.

Doomgaze, your problem might also be from the pads vibrating against the calipers. The vibration stops when the brakes are applied. There are some anti-squeal products on the market that you apply to the back of the pads that will stop them from vibrating. Also make sure that the alignment tabs on the pads aren't too loose.

And it could be cheap pads like J body said.

Just had the same problem on my 99. Went to the brake shop and the guy told me that the rotors needed turning. I said " the sound doesn't happen when the brakes are applied." I told him I thought the bearings were going bad. He walked me out to my truck and grabbed a rotor and said "if the bearings were bad I could move the rotors with my hand." It moved big time and he said "I'll be ****, your bearings are bad!" Bearings replaced and no more squeal.
