Spun bearing on #4 piston, 75K miles, what happened?

Hi guys, We are very confused how a piston spun a bearing on our diesel...sweet truck, but now a lawn ornament with a loan still on it. Bought it used last year. Changed oil, put new tires on it, new trailer mirrors and we have a written record but lost the receipts...paid cash for the filters and oil because I am unemployed at the moment. Dodge won't honor warranty nor will the warranty company we have. We have had it less than a year, only 15k miles put on it by us, tows a 7000 lb travel trailer, and we have babied it. Any advice on to how this covered by warranty? How long has it been happening? What happened and how could this happen??? :'( ???

Man I don't know. Sounds like maybe an oiling problem or something. Maybe some crap got logged in there and caused it to spin. ??? That sucks that no one will honor your warranty. Why won't they? I hope you get it figured out soon. Good luck man.

did you buy it used from a dealer? I would think they should cover it on warantee....are they fighting on the fact that you cannot produce receipts for oil? I thats the case I d bet some one can fix you up with some.....<br><br>Or emery cloth the journal, measure.....try to get a close over size bearing ( i have no idea if .001, .002 , .003 even exist) fill it with oil.....tow it down near the dealer....trade it in......or cross fingers and it may hold together for another 100000k miles.....where are you located?<br><br>

Thanks Big Blue. Dodge dealer says they never touched the truck, so we don't know if the journal has been looked at. Cummins dealer looked first because our warranty company was gonna approve it, then found the truck was still under warranty. Cummins said it was a spun bearing and asked for long block repair. Long story short, 21k lawn ornament in Maine right now. Pretty hot with Dodge and sending out letters but we would like it resolved via warranty. We are considering selling both the diesel chassis and my wife's 98 1500 grocery getter now. Thanks! Oh and no mods made on the diesel that we are aware of. We didn't do any.

I've seen this happen on one of my customers truck.<br><br>It was right after we had put gauges and a PE COMP.<br><br>Dealer warrentied truck at 98K.<br><br><br>Why can't you get warrenty?<br><br>Merrick Cummings Jr

1320 bought it used at a GMC dealer, it was a trade for a duramax. We are in Mass and the truck is in Maine. 300 miles away, the oil pan, engine parts have been in the bed since 5-22 and the block and various other components since then....lots of rain....lots of rust....probably totally shot on the inside of the block now. <br><br>MCummings, can't produce the receipts, found the written down notes of the changes in my wife's day planner. Star Center declined it via Dodge because we couldn't produce maintenance records.<br><br>

Just thinking out loud here, I wonder about paying a diesel mechanic an hour or two for his time to get a &quot;professional&quot; oppinion on what the engine went through. Any oil left to send for analysis? Then maybe pay a lawyer an hour to listen to your case.

Redleg...Cummins Northeast looked at it, the oil was full of brass, we have the report. We made Dodge pay for that labor and analysis. We have letters going out to attorney generals and anyone breathing at Dodge, Cummins and our warranty company. We do know of a an attorney however, as you can imagine money is tight. We loved that truck...LISTEN TO THAT TURBO!!....now, just a lawn ornament. We are trying to move to Maine in the process and would love to get the truck running again, but we were quoted $12-$13k for long block repair thru Dodge.

Seems like the easy sollution is to find the receipts....or atleast some that are for an oil change or buying oil.....someone must have a couple.....you could have been traveling when it was done..... <br><br>

1320 we are the only ones we know that own a CTD, and at this point no matter what we produce we feel perhaps, they would still decline it....lost our tempers a few times with Dodge and thinking they will just decline it to decline it now. :-[ [undecided] They are standing by the decision is what has been conveyed to use, after we found the written notes in my wife's dayplanner.

Couple of comments. First, that number on the bearing is a part number and not a serial number. <br>Second, why would the oil be full of brass? Other metals maybe, but brass????? Are you sure it was brass?<br>Third, is the oil filter still on the engine? if so maybe you can get a good oil sample from that for analysis. Also I would open up the filter and take a look at what is inside it.<br>Now for some additional questions:<br>Besides 'brass' showing up on the oil analysis, what else was in the oil. This is important. Did the analysis indicate that the oil was fairly low mileage? Did the analysis indicate that the correct type and weight of oil was present?<br>What were the symptoms that you had a problem? What mechanical noises were there? Was there a change in oil pressure? What was your oil pressure prior to the problem at idle and at cruise? Did the engine run differantly when this happened?? Was the oil pressure higher? Are there any signs on the remaining bearings that there was oil starvation? Have the oil pump removed and check inside. Check for scoring and abnormal wear on the pump interior. What brand of oil filter was installed at the oil change? Was this the only oil change since you owned the truck?<br>In my book records on the Daytimer are just that; records. Nowhere in any Dodge or Cummins documents to my knowledge does it say that a formal receipt from a dealer is necessary to prove something happened.<br>Answer all the above questions and that may prompt a suggestion.
