speedometer is killing me
Still no speedo.
What i've done:
changed the chewed up gear inside the trans
installed new vss
cut ground wire in harness and grounded to frame(my pcm dont work)
still no speedo operation.
My next try is to tap into the other wire off the vss and run it into the cab and hook it up to a multi meter and see if im getting a signal form the vss? what kinda reading should I see doing this?
So lets say I get a reading and its correct...then my problem would the gauge cluster??
Thanks for your help,Mike.

I don't think the speedo will work without a working pcm or a lot of technical wiring. I do seem to remember someone who figured it out but I forget who it was or how it was done.

These speedo's are notorious for wearing out the plastic gears in dash unit. I had to go to a Dakota Digital unit after replacing mine on a 91 twice with OEM. You can't buy them from junk yards in TX, so the dealer has to send them in to factory for replacement current mileage settings. Expensive and the new one lasted 6 months. Just good old Dodge crap.

I could have swore wannadiesel said the pcm is only the vss's ground.I have grounded the dark wire to the chassis.I just tested the vss the white/orange wire is reading .24 volts in 2nd gear idling.
I take apart the dash and find that white wire in there and im getting the same reading.Still no speedo or odometer,so I grab my dash cluster out of the parts truck and still get nothing.WTH!
Idunno, one thing I know for sure these old dodge trucks are a POS to work on lol love that motor but **** I hate the truck.
Ill go pile into the sticky, and hope for some answers or at least some ideas of what my issue is.
Thanks,Mike.

Ok guys,I have acces to a 81-89 gauge cluster to convert it out to a cable driven speedo.
My concerns are will my other guages work proper with this intire cluster installed in my 93?
Or maybe I just remove the speedo section of the 81-89 cluster and install it into my 93's cluster so all the other gauges read as they would, but have the cable driven speedo in there?
Thanks, and my opologies for calling our trucks POS last night I was hot! and very frustrated and about half sick from breathing diesel fumes idleing that thing on jack stands trying to figure out the speedo system.
This morning I have a better aditude and just wanting to get a speedo to work proper.

Man, I know what you are going through, hang in there. If it were me I would have probably given up before this point and just run a GPS with me for tracking miles, fuel economy calc and speed.

It is frustrating lol Ive been slowly bring this truck back from the dead...I found it next to the pacific ocean on the edge of the state of Wa. some gal owned it and it had sat for two years with moss allover it! its a tight! truck just never mantained.
This speedo adventure is one of the last things on my loooong list of things to fix.Its kicking my **** to say the leasy lol
Ive rebuilt:
FRont suspension
front steering
front brakes
front wheel bearings
rear brakes
rear axle bearings
axle seals
window rubber,both sides
replaced both back wing windows and rubber
piston style lift pump
hx 35 turbo
4" exhaust
BHAF mod
pulled up carpet and sound deadened
new tires and wheels
got the alt to charge again
rear sway bar
fixed power windows
fixed pass seat flip forward mechanism
repaired the jump seats in back
fixed tail gate latch/handle
new clutch/tail shaft seal,rear main
KDP
converted all drivtrain and engine oil to Royal purple.
new u joints greased with R.P.
new radiator
thermostat
fan clutch
rad. hoses
heater hoses
boost tube couplers
adjusted steering box
whats left:
speedo fix
a/c rebuild
cruise control
replace PCM
Pretty crazy!! when ya list it all out like this...****! ive been busy! Its just I would rather rebuild an old truck than buy a new one...I think its cheaper and I can do it out of my pocket and not make a **** truck payment... I hate truck payments.
So Im almost done rebuilding this ol beast, ive hit a wall on this speedo thing, with my limited knowledge of these trucks...but Ive sure learned alot!
Thanks,Mike.

Holy ****!!!
I guarantee you will have the truck for a long time. No way anyone could sell a truck with that much resto work put into it. I bet you can't wait to finish it off. Will have to post up some photos too. How did the KDP tab work go for you? I was supposed to get that done last week on my truck but it will have to wait till August.
I take it the speedo function has nothing to do with the PCM this year truck since it seems you know the PCM is already in need of replacement?

I went thru a lotta grief with my speedo from day 1 with the truck, and especially after changing transmissions. One trick I devised was to turn the speedo shaft with a small cordless drill to see if the speedo reacted. That saved alot of reinstalling and test drives. One problem that was chronic and intermittent was the wires going into the VSS getting wet. When I realized that I filled the terminal cavity with dielectric grease and gooped the outside where the wires go in with silicone. Perfect ever since! Now if I can just resurrect my cruise control, .... hmmmm

If the need is still there these people have a good fix for the plastic gear in the speedo head.
