speedo and odom. not working

i bought a 96 ram 2500 with the speedometer and odometer not working. the guy said he had this same problem before and that the sender unit on the tail shaft was in the wrong postition. he said he brought to the dodge dealer and they fixed it, but he cant remember how. is there a specific postion for this sender unit, i tried a few different ways and none seem to make any difference. the wierd thing with this is that i recently went on a road trip and after about 10 hours of driving i looked down and the odometer had gone up .2 km. it hasnt moved since

The position of the sensor is dependent on the amount of teeth the drive gear has. Have you looked at the gear? If you have been just randomly repositioning it, it is probably toast. When you pull it off look to see how long the square portion of the sensor shaft is. Should be about an inch. I went thru this because of a ham handed transmission replacer. He installed it wrong, then because the speedo wasn't working he rotated it farther. The pressure on the sensor shaft from the gear caused the shaft to break, so I had to buy both. The shop owner never returned my calls and the shop is 140 miles from my house. Ft. Worth readers beware.

Thanks, ill take a look at it first thing tomorrow morning. it all looks to be good though, the teeth on the end of the shaft all look decent, since i cant see in the hole on the tail shaft im kinda guessing here but it doesnt seem like this gear touches the other gear inside there. i felt around inside a bit too and there isnt anything bouncing around in there.
