I am looking to remove my spare tire and put a nice large train horn in its place.

I carry around a LARGE can of Fix-A-Flat and I also have a 2.5 Gallon air tank that I can use.

Is removing the spare a DUMB idea??

You may never need a spare but if you ever do and don't have one, you will wish you had it! The agravition will not be worth the horn.

I travel in remote places that get cold enough at night to kill me. If you get a flat and don't have a spare, they find you frozen in a day or so.

Full size spare for me, no question.

I know what you mean, pet05 - I've never had a blowout for 100's of 1000's of miles on either service truck running BFG AT KOs and Toyo MTs... hate to carry the extra weight around - but if you don't have it, Murphy's Law will apply!

1989 Pontiac - Driven 155,000 miles - NO need for spare (car junked)

1994 Olds - Driven 140,000 miles - NO need for spare

2005 Corvette - 10,000 miles - NO need for spare (car sold)

2006 Dodge - 7,000 miles - NO need for spare

Almost 350,000 miles worth of driving and NEVER needed a spare. Sure, I had a flat tire but they were all SLOW leakers, so I would always have time to take it in.

What about putting the spare in the bed??

I have a locking bed cover, so it would be secure, the bed is empty 90% of the time???

Aint it the truth...Ive never used the spare on my trucks except today...30 degrees, snowing, running down the interstate passing a semi with a car behind me goin about 75-80, then the rear of the truck jumped sideways almost into the semi, let off, pulled behind the semi, got off the interstate and sure enough time to pull out the ol spare...REALLY glad I didnt tag the semi truck when it went!!

So what Im sayin is yeah, ya might wanna keep the spare, just in case!!

As you can put your spare in the bed, you have a great place to mount the horns and still be able to carry your spare. And as it has been pointed out, there are other places to mount it.

I removed my spare when I installed my B & W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch and never put it back. I really couldn't use it anyway since its about 4" shorter than the rest of my tires. In fact, right now you can find it in the classifieds.....

I have yet to use one, but ill tell you what, if im stuck out in the middle of nowhere without it, id be a little worried.

That, and with my luck, the time I dont carry one, ill need it....

Just last December I was traveling to the east coast on I-64 with a new set of tires on my mini-van (1500 miles on the tires). It was at night with a light rain falling and suddenly a rumble form the rear. Got stopped and yep, a flat. The tire would have been repairable but at 70 mph it ruined the tire before I could stop. Sure glad I had a spare !

My last truck I sold after 10 years, had 225,000 miles and the brand new spare under it. But than again you never know.
