spare tire pulley and cable

My cable broke sum-a-where's, an I lost muy spear tar, dunno where. Let me know if you fine er.

I pulled out the pulley but I don't want to replace like for like or go get a used one that may break also. It just seems like a hokey contraption. Is there and aftermarkets pulley available that's better?

Rust free, even the cable looks clean where it broke.

If youre worried about the strength of the metal cable, Id suggest a couple good nylon tie-down straps. They would do nicely as a backup and wont rot.
That support that crosses the frame rails that the pulley bolts to can get really rusty up on top.

i have the same problem, but i know where my tire is. also my cable is free of rust, not a bit on it, i think that most cable that they use for underbody hoisting like that is stainless.

the "after market solution" i have had with mine has been the same way since i got the truck, spare in the bed. the only issue with that is i have 285/75R16 and it nearly takes up all my short bed. i have been looking for a new way since i got the truck a year ago....havent come up with anything that i like yet.

Why don't you just secure it to the side of the bed? It beats having someone steal your tire/wheel.

Interesting problem and I never thought of such an issue. I always thought someone could steal the spare tire. I am going to look to see if I can fabricate a weld on or bolt on support bracket. When I do I will lubricate things.

Someone probably stole it in the first place. It's relatively easy w/a pair of bolt cutters just snip the cable. If it was not rusted, this is what probably happened as I find it hard to believe that a 3/8 steel cable is going to break from the weight of a 100lb tire/wheel.

I secure my spare with chain & lock. At least limts the honest thieves of convinience. I should secure it more with some rope to hold it in place, in case cable breaks.

i don't think it's 3/8, more like 1/4

I haven't had my spare down for a while but it seems like it wasn't even (1/4") that heavy.

You just need to get a dually and you will have 2 spares with you all the time and the real spare can stay home untill tire rotation time.

It's definitely 1/4". I'd lean towards the theif theory except that it had actually broken previously. The first time I hit a hard bump going over Chinook pass at Mt. Rainer. The tire just fell onto the road. I had less cable then originally but the remainder looked like it was in great condition, so I Jimmied (is that a word) a cable clamp back onto the cable and it held great.

This time the break was almost at the end of the cable that is in the pulley. I don't think anyone could get a tool large enough up there cut the 1/4" steel braid.

The downside of putting a tire in a bed is that I need it mostly when I'm camping with a camper in the bed and going over dangerous roads.

I'm thinking about welding some sort of all thread and super angle contraption that I can lock the tire into place with so that all bets are off, it'd be secure and stronger than a single cable. the downside of this is that I'd probably need a jack to put the tire up there since there wouldn't be a pulley...Unless I got another pulley and re-inforced using the thread/angle combo..

I bought a nice gooseneck from a dealer once that had a spare come out from under the truck and take out both axles and bent the heck out of the ramp holders. FYI I carry mine in the bed

I looked at my spare tire mount this weekend. It is possible to weld or bolt a bracket to secure the tire and lock it to prevent theft. I am fabricating a wheel chair carrier for my 2" receiver. When I finish, I will work on the bracket. I will still have the pulley to hoist the tire, then install the security bracket.
