SOY BEAN FUEL

I tried a few tanks of 5% soy bean fuel we have up in MN / ND area. My mileage dropped from 18-20 to 15-17. Nothing like paying 3 cents more per gallon, having a bit less performance and dropping my mileage. Has anybody else tried this great stuff yet? :'(

Re:SOY BEAN FUEL

Biodiesel is good stuff folks, and nothing new. I've run 20% biodiesel in my mercedes for 3 years with great results, and 100% biodiesel in my jetta TDI for 40K miles. Tons of others are as well. Yes it has slightly less BTU's per gallon of fuel, yielding a few less mpgs. However, the increase in lubricity, cetane, and reduction in emissions is well worth the increased cost. Not only will you feel good because you're reducing emissions(and the exhaust smells good at b20 or higher), you are also not supporting foreign oil consumption or sending any more money to the middle east than you have to. Biodiesel supports American farmers and the economy. Its renewable. Lastly, and importantly, you won't believe how much more smoothly and quietly your engine will run on B20 or higher. B20 requires no modifications. Cummins says 5% as a CYA statement, to protect themselves against warranty claims from people using poorly made homebrew. Commercially sold biodiesel is held to ASTM standards and is great stuff. I have 3 drums of it in my garage right now, and never have to go to the station =]

Lightman: Yep true biodiesel is good stuff-I'm running my Cummins on it.
The soybean fuel some people talk about here is crude soybean oil. No transestherification! This stuff is very dangerous to the engine. It will hurt fuel mileage massively, has lower lubricity than #2 and so on.

I think it's a pity that there are so many scams around that use the "bio" label.

AlpineRAM
That is one reason I posted the link to let people get the real story and not start dumping used french fry oil in the tank. I am trying to find out where I can buy it here locally.

DD4X4

Re:SOY BEAN FUEL

Very true, running straight WVO(waste veg oil) can be disastrous without the proper setup and filtration. Biodiesel and WVO are way different things =] Biodiesel is great stuff, it really makes the idle quieter and smoother and smells good.

I have three 55 gal drums in my garage of biodiesel, and run my TDI on it full time. No gas stations, just back in and pump baby!

Re:SOY BEAN FUEL

Hey Folks. I'm running b100 (100%) in my TDI. I've had B20 or higher in the tdi since the first tank I filled in it, but have run b100 exclusively for a collective 25K miles, out of the 55k I have now. I run B20 in the Mercedes, and have since may 2001. Both cars run much more smoothly and quietly at idle, and have greatly reduced smoke. I can't get any smoke out of the tdi even at full throttle with the b100.

I'm lucky in that the local biodiesel distributor(in Tampa) makes bulk oil deliveries once a week or so in my neighborhood. Since it's only a half mile from me, they agreed to deliver drums to my house free of charge. I haven't filled up at a gas station in my tdi for months! Just back in and fill ;D

Here's a pic of my setup. You'll see a few drums, my drum pump with 10 micron water blocking filter 8), and the Dessicating breathers on the other side, keeping the fuel dry and clean ;D
Re:SOY BEAN FUEL

Sweet, I'm still trying to find out where I can get it around here.

How much is a drum of it?

Re:SOY BEAN FUEL

Prices vary, but most places charge between $1.80 and $3/gal. Some places have drum deposits and the drums are free. The place in Tampa charges $18.

Dieseldude, ask and ye shall receive ;D

Bagwell Oil
PO Box 136
Onancock, VA 23417

Frederick Nothrup, Inc
PO Box 370
Warsaw, VA 22572 Stan Terhune 800-701-1033

Griffin Oil & Propane
1224 Holland Rd
Suffolk, VA 23434 Chris Pond 757-539-4761

Holtzman Corp
PO Box 8
Mt Jackson, VA 22842 Rick Koontz 540-477-3131

Kilduff Oil
691 Main St
Reedville, VA 22539 Al Christopher 888-276-3320 B2,B5,B10,B20

Noblett Appliance
PO Box 30
Kilmarnock, VA 22482 800-535-0084

Noblett Oil & Propane
PO Box 426
Kilmarnock, VA 22482 Doug Faulkner 800-633-4467 B2 & up

Northern Neck Oil Company
11549 History Land Highway
Warsaw, VA 22572 Carroll Pemberton 804-333-3835 B2-B20

Peoples Oil
Montross, VA 800-633-4467

PEP-UP
Temperanceville, VA Ralph S. Re:SOY BEAN FUEL

I've never heard of anyone really messing with b5, its such a small amount you'd never notice a difference. Most public pumps that have been set up have b20, and are usually only 10-20 cents more than regular diesel. B100 will be more expensive obviously.. Most people that go to try it out take 5 or 6 five gallon cans and fill them up and their tank.. Then you can mix up a few tanks of b20 without having to go back..

In my experience, the smell, quieter idle, reduction in smoke, smoother operation etc, occurs around b20 or higher. B20 is totally safe in any diesel, requires no mods, won't clog your fuel filter or anything of the sort..

Warning- you will like burnin the bean! 8)

Re:SOY BEAN FUEL

That is what I read about the B20 too. It did say that the 100 acted like a cleaner / dissolver on rubber stuff though. I'm going ot try to 20 mix or at least get some in hand and mix a few gallons per tank anyway. For every gallon I buy there, that is one less imported. One person won't make much difference but a hundred or a thousand may start something.
