How about some tips on Twins?

Now the conversion Ford recently Died its horrible death, its going to have to sit for a year maybe 18 months in partial retirement till i can go through it but when i do I want to seriously look at Twins. The truck will pull a gooseneck on the weekends. Basically a working toy.

I recently saw a 95 twin turbod dodge in Tahoe that pulled a 28' camper over the pass with twins 500hp no exhaust temp problems going like a bat out of hel, no lag, no smoke just a small puff off the line. Rode with the guy, talked to him, got some details but he didnt know much about the twins or the injectors he bought the truck pre setup he loves the 18-19 mpg empty and 12 loaded. I do this and those #'s and characteristics are what im aiming for.

I have a 96 180 Hp motor to start with,
i am going to tear down re-ring and bearing, possibly throw in a new set of teflon pistons?
Send the Head out to be O-ringed
Piers CAM

Using the 180hp Pump or not?
keep 3000 Gov springs?
Get Delivery valves?
stay with #10 plate?
Any other mods?

Injectors?
Mach2's or 3's or DD2's or 3's, 370 marines?

Twins, call up Piers?
If i get thier setup you can see that im shooting for the 460-500hp ball park. What combination of housings any suggestions where do i begin my research hence the 18 month waiting period. What have you guys had good success with, i have been readin alot of your posts in older pages.

Alot of people down here say this is insane you cant pull a trailer with anything over 350 hp Why not? obviously after riding in that truck in tahoe one should be able to cool it, keep the smoke down and make the motor live with a properly setup pair of twins. I have riden in trucks pushing 450-500hp out of thier B1's and Hx-40's hooked up to a trailer though they have to really watch thier temps, and they smoke like banchees off the line ussually. I want to go twins because of the variable high altitude towing that it will do, it will spend alot of time going over Donner pass, Nevada, Utah and colorado passes.

This will remain a 6 spd truck clutch is not an issue until after 550hp

Thanks guys
Lets Hear it

EGTs are controlled with mass flow of air, of course. Water temps are the limiting factor to towing with that much HP and elevation.

You wont climb too many hills using that much HP before the cooling system cant keep up.

450HP with moedrate loads? Perhaps.

Engine didnt die, Injector pump needs a Delivery valve, lift pump is a little slow and #3 and 5 injectors are slobbering. All simple i just need to round up parts and spend a weekend swapping out.

The killer was this weekend at 75 MPH the T-case lost the lower oil seal dumped oil siezed up twisted tranny output, t-case input, driveline and broke the rear yoke off of the rear diff.

Time for a serious investment in time and money to get it back on the road. I can fix most of it with parts that i have it will just take time after work and with the Jeep season rapidly approaching i dont see much time till this fall. Then since i have to work on it anyways might as well do it the way i always wanted it

As to cooling that is definately a good thing to keep in mind I wouldnt have though of that. My system holds 6.75 gallons of coolant, utilizing a 5 core radiator, ill have to do some math to check that out and see if it will flow and disipate enough.

as to the trailer probably only 12000lbs goosneck max with three jeeps two on the trailer and one on towbar behind

Don do you have any suggestions or am i going the wrong way. maybe it shouldnt tow that much (whats your .02 for getting this thing into the upper pony numbers)

Thanks
Dusty

The second half of the radiator core is only 1/4 as efficient as the first. A cool trick used in some applications of limited frontal space and good depth area is a staggered core.

Two thinner radiators with a ducted air supply between the two

Air leaving the first core is ducted around the second. Air is also fed to the second core with ducting.

Efficacy is much higher with this set up.
