Some diagnosis help please.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lately I've been getting more than usual start up smoke. Even at 80F ambiant air and only sitting 8 hours while at work. Lasts for about 30sec or so and clears up. Idle is somewhat rough but not bad during that.

Seems to have excess black smoke at engine operating temp under WOT from what I can tell in the mirror. Cleared out the muffler (no cat) then the normal puff under accel and then some extra at full boost.

At idle I can hear a occasional click it seems ever 15sec or so coming from the front driver fender well. Almost like a solenoid clicking on and off.

My initial thoughts are a leaky injector but now I'm thinking maybe a FCA? Sound familiar to anyone?

its almost at 122k and all stock. Have run 2 stroke oil in it ever since I got it at 43k. Milage has been the same the past month or so and no obvious smell of diesel in the oil or level rise.

thanks in advance for any insight!

It could be the FCA, an injector, rail pressure sensor...

Do you have any codes? Turn the key on/off without cranking three times, leave it on the third time and see if anything displays in the odometer. If nothing happens, try it 4 times.

How is your fuel mileage? Any loss of power? Is your oil level ok? (not high?)

Haven't had a MIL light so haven't looked for codes. Are any of them possibly soft codes?

Milage has been average with no huge loss, oil level is still in the safe area but will monitor more frequently, no obvious smell of diesel but i've also only noticed this for about a week. Power seems to be normal and no issues with the WOT runs i've done trying to load it up. Maybe I'll just pull a trailer around for a week. Its def. been a while.

Yes, there can be a soft code with no CEL.

You can also cruise by autozone or the like, they'll read if for free.

Been a while, but here's an update and please offer up opinions.

still no codes come up. white smoke at start up, cold, is mildly thick, usually putting it in R or D would clear it up, if not it would idle and put it out for a while.

last weekend after sitting 36hrs putting it in R caused a big stumble and some surging. After a light load on the engine up the street it returned to normal. Seems to be the case everytime.

Still no fuel in the oil. check a few times a week. Getting some odd vibrations at certain engine speeds as well. Power is still good but maybe more black under WOT and full boost. Fuel milage has been almost straight level through out the summer, around 17.63 last fill, with 6 month avg of 17.88. Thinking still one or two injectors are leaking after shutdown. Its almost at 130k.

Sounds like an injector. I had just about the same problem and had to have one injector replaced.

Yea it seems more and more like that's what it is. Hopefully a test can find which one as it seems to run normal after it gets going, not even fully warmed.

Big question is weather to do all or just the one or two. if its one I might be inclined to just do that one. But with 130k I'm sure the others are getting a bit long in the tooth as well.
