Some basic info
Some basic info
Just coming over to ctd from psd. Would like some basic info on various items to help out of fuel mileage and some decent mods. Maybe how to boost fuel pressure stuff like that. Sure do like the ctd better than the ford. Don't know why i didn't do it in the first place. Also, are coolant sca levels a big issue in the cummins? Don't know what has been done on this engine, been reading about all sorts of stuff and really don't know where to start. Thinking about the kdp issue. Thanks in advance for the replies.

jarhead

JARHEAD

Welcome!!

You'll have a ton of excellent info here. To answer some of your questions. KDP, you better kill it before it kills you. Odds are it will not fall out. However, it is an expensive gamble and if it does come out, odds are very high that you'll have to replace the timimg gear box and some gears. Cost: between $1000 and $3500. Cost to fix KDP: Do it yourself as much as zero, Pay a shop, expect around $200 to $400.

I have now done about 12 of them and have yet to have to buy anything except some time. The seals are usually resuable.

Better mileage: Get rid of your resonator, and put in a straight pipe. Have your valves adjusted, PROPERLY!!! Get a free breathing air filter such as a K&N. Install a new fuel filter at least annually, I do mine every oil change. This is overkill, but they are cheap and one of the best protections for your expensive motor. One thing that was suggested to me and really helped was to install a new fuel filter, fill it with a product called STANADYNE, sold under the label of John Deere diesel fuel additive, start the motor and let it idle for 2 minutes. Shut it down and let it sit over night. This will clean your pumps and injectors. I noticed an immeadiate improvment in performance by doing this. Then put an additive in once a month or so to help keep the system cleaner.

You'll get a hundred other suggestions and also some that will disagree with what I've said. But, these are the things that have worked for me.

Your number one priority is to tab that KDP. If you go thru the threads on this forum. You'll find many stories of guys that waited until they had an oil leak and found the gear case cracked.

Good luck

Gary
Re:Some basic info
Yea, i figured on the exhaust stuff. I saw in your signature "no silencer ring". Exactly what is that. Sorry for all the questions. Just going to take a little time to figure out all this dodge stuff. Anybody got any questions about powerstrokes???!!!!! Just kidding.
Re:Some basic info
Welcom to DTR JARHEAD.
You asked about the silencer ring.
This ring is a muffler device to keep down the whine of the turbo.
It has nothing to do with the effeciency or performance of the turbo. Just keeps down the whine.
Its a personal preference... some folks want more turbo whine, others dont like it.
I took my silencer ring off becuase I enjoy the the sound of a screaming turbo.
To get to the ring, take off the air inlet hose at the turbo.
Look inside the turbo, right in front of the blades, you will see a metalic conical shaped ring just inside of the turbo housing.
The silencer is held in by a snap ring.
It will cause no harm to remove it, it will add nothing but turbo whine.
Now if you want to turn your trucks performance up a little, place a question in the High Performance - Aftermarket Accessories section of this board... you will get all the info your looking for there.
Again, welcome aboard and we hope you stay a while!
Rich.

Coolant SCAs are not an issue with the CTD motors in our trucks because they are not sleeved cylinders. The biggest issue with the cooling is that the thermostats cycle the temp up and down enough to show on the gauge - no problem, just can surprise you on a hard pull when the temp climbs up some and then drops.

BOMB order (actually your choice )
Gauges first - EGT, boost, trans temp (may want to get rid of original lines and go to screw-in fittings, get the 95 gas recall lines to get the inline port for the trans gauge)
Pump mods - GSK, torque plate, timing but you will need air mods to get the most out of it
Breathing - gut/get rid of the cat, 4" straight pipe ;D , good air filter (K&N, BHAF, Scotty II, AFE, etc.)
After power upgrades the next thing to be eaten will be trans - lots of good aftermarket stuff but all of it is expensive
After that you can tinker with the appearance add-ons (performance first, looks later)

Just be aware that BOMBitis is addictive, it is communicable, and will leave you broke if uncontrolled.

Welcome to the DARK SIDE
