So what exactly can I do with an HY35?

Are there any compressor upgrades for the HY or do I need to find an HX35. If I need an HX is there a good place to get them? I don't want to go spastic with the power, just want to flow a little more air (famous last words)....

Good place for the HY is the garbage can.
Just look around,there's always HX's for sale. Wouldn't pay more than $350 for one though.

Good place for an HY35 is on a turbo 4-banger. If you are looking for a upgrade, I'd look at a 57mm schwitzer or a smaller Garrett. Bit more money, but you get more bang for the buck.

usually you can find an hx cheap ,I got one for 100$. it was a huge improvement over my hy, egts are way more manageable,can now use levels 3-6 on my edge, without melting down the engine, and no difference in turbo lag

I did upgrade my HY a long time ago. Piers did it it was something he called a nasty nine. It was decent but the next performance mod I made it started barking easy and at every shift at least with the mods I had at the time. Couldnt drive around it or through it. Then went to a Piers HX35.
As mentioned by previous posters get yourself an HX for cheap and go from there. You may want to keep it as is or get it worked over a bit depending on your mods.

I had 2 HY's my stock one and one someone gave me that I sent to Piers to be turned into the nasty nine. I put them in the classifieds here and sold them both to riceburners who were going to add some air to their 4 bangers.

Well, that's motivating.... Is the HX a direct bolt on?

Perfect bolt up. Really nice upgrade. If you get one used, might wanna have it checked over. It'd be a major bummer to pay a hundo, throw it on, only to find it has bad shaft play or the bearings are shot.

I held onto my HY just cause I knew I wouldnt be able to sell it for much and if I ever had turbo problems, I could throw it back on to stay in driving condition.

Other wise, no there really isnt much you can do that wouldnt justify gettin a HX instead.

Well, I'm looking for a used HX now. My HY builds pressure nicely but seems to react more to the new tranny and it's lower stall point TC, I guess. I've got my camper on now and can't run anything on the Edge over level 1 or it will surge....

On another note, if you run the pressures up on an HY35 and it just injects hot air would you see that on the pyro? In other words, how can I tell when I've hit the peak performance of my turbo? EGTs, or what?

I personally never ran my HY over 28 lbs for fear of failure.
EGT's will not stop pretty much. If you have it set right with the right fuel, you'll hit what ever degree and stop or drop a little. If your over boosting it your egt's will just keep going and not get any better.

I had an hy and anything over level 3 would trip my defuel, and I could NOT reach 60mph before the pyro was hitting 1400, now with everything being the same I can just trip 1400 on level 5 or 6, but I'm hitting 80-90mph when that happens, above senarios were from a dead stop WOT run, I have mine set to defuel at 30psi (I think 32-34 is pretty much the max)

I can easily peg 40 psi with my HX. Not good for it but i can get there.
The HX doesn't have ball bearings. Just 2 bronze bushings. Gently grab the nut on the air in side and gently try to wiggle up and down. The compressor wheel shouldn't be able to hit the sides of the housing. If it does a rebuild kit is only about $80 on Ebay. If you can rebuild a carburetor you can rebuild a turbo.

Seriously, is a hybrid HX35/40 much better than just a straight 35? I'm just trying to get a little better breathing and be able to run the Juice on level 5 every once in awhile....

Well i have a 35/40 center section sitting here waiting to go in. Finally found a cover for it on CompD. Can't wait to get it.
The compressor on a 35/40 is 60mmx 86mm.
The HX35 is 54mm x 78mm.

Are you running a j-hook on the HY? If not, that may just be the extra air you need. For the fuel you have, an HY with a j-hook should be just fine. You won't get any other turbo to spool as fast as an HY. Fast spool is good for more than keeping smoke down and getting out of the hole fast, it also helps keep EGT's in check. Sure you will reach a point where the HY runs out of air to match the fuel once you start adding a lot of fuel mods. I can make 35 psi easy with mine, usally closer to 38psi with a j-hook. I have had had my truck in a lot of different configs and played around with several different turbos. I got tired of smoke, egt's. lag and the whole bit. For the fuel you have, an HY should be just fine. You may get more volume from an HX or Hybrid or whatever but you will pay the price on spool up.
