Question snap ring broke...

i went home to minnesota a couple weeks ago. while i was there a snap ring broke, it was on the tail shaft after it comes out of the transfer case right up against the last bearing. has anyone else had problems with this?? The previous owner of the truck is my uncle and it had did it to him once before too. i got lucky.... when it broke on him he bought two snap rings in case it did it again (mainly because it took 3-4 days to get it from the dealer) any insight on this would be great. it's an easy fix i just don't want it to happen on one of my road trips. thanks -Chris

Somewhat common.

I have had one truck that was bad, it would break the snap ring about every 15-20k miles. I was pretty quick at fixing it and sold the truck before I had the trans worked on by someone else.

theres a t-case saver that u can get to fix that problem. Most likely someone took the snap ring off once and didn't replace it, so it was alittle distorted.

Ya there is an up grade for that. I had a Ford diesel in my mirror, I was wanting to enter the highway. So the last time I looked I was boosting through 16 lbs, and boom. Probably over 20 when it broke. I took out everything including the chain.

Yeah - you don't want to drive it if the ring is broken. It'll take out just about everything in the transfer case. Don't ask how I found out...

This is where I purchased my snap ring. I believe it is actually from a Ford T/case.

thanks for posting that, I think Ill order one. with vssman posting above, thats 2 people from my area alone that have had this problem.

oops on edit: It appears this product does not fit a 241HD which is what I have.. The guy from drivetrain specialists is trying to find me a aircraft grade snap ring.

Just get a new one from ur dodge dealer. They should have one in stock, or be able to have one the next day, and its only $4.

I have heard that the Ford snap ring for their transfer case works and is a better product.

according to the guy from drivetrain specailties, the output shaft is bigger, thus wont fit.
