Smoke..No Smoke???
Still new to the diesel world so I apoligize for the newbie questions.
What's the real deal with the black smoke? Is it all a timing issue? Is it running rich? Or does that just pertain to gas powered vehicles?
I see a lot of trucks belch out black smoke going down the road, some don't smoke at all. My truck never smoked till the dealer reflashed the computer, now under acceleration it will leave a cloud. I bought a painless performance piggy back module and on settings above 4, under accelaration it will smoke so bad you can't see the car behind you.
If it smokes a lot, is it getting worse mileage than a truck that doesn't smoke?
Does it mean anything?
Thanks....

Black smoke is unburnt diesel fuel. Overfueling is the most common cause of black smoke, although timing can play a smaller role as well.
Anytime you see it you're essentially wasting diesel, so the mileage is going to be lower.

Well for starters your performance box, as you noticed will give you more . I'm not familiar with that box, but just about all programmers and modules are modifying injection timing, duration, and/or pressure to increase power with that comes smoke. If your looking for reduction in smoke... timing, more airflow, lower settings (painless), wait for turbo to spool before stomping it, twins, nitrous, Smarty Jr,(with beta) are all ways to lower smoke levels. Do you have gauges? Smoke is also associated with high EGTs. Hope this helps a bit.

Here's the module I have.

It's called a Striker I Power Module, made by Painless performance. It's OK. Never helped a bit with my mileage but does increase power.

Check out the Smarty Junior.( with beta software ) http://madselectronics.com/ I can vouch for the lower EGTs and it smokes way less than my old programmer with comparable tunes. Not trying to start a fuss by recommending a Smarty, IMHO its a nice power adder without all the smoke that most give you for the same hp increase.

Not sure if they come with it(beta) loaded, once you get it you can plug it in to find out which software is loaded. Compare that to the beta software on the MADS website. If its not loaded you can update your JR. right off the web site. It's free and only takes a few minutes. I didn't need the beta (mines a 03) but quite a few guys are running it and claim an improvement in smoke reduction.
