Smarty, tst, or both

Yes I had to parady someones old sig becasue it fit =P

I've been running a smarty for over a year almost exclusively on sw9 with the tst working when it wanted to. So I finally got the tst grounded right and have been doing some testing between the two.

With sw9 I have dynoed 492 and 493 uncorrected at the last two spring flings, so needless to say its fun to drive. Power comes on quickly and rpms will fly past 3500. Now when I went in for state inspection I went ahead and put the truck on sw0 aka half power. I was surprised just how clean the truck ran on this sw, but what really surprised me is how much power I made on 1/2 power. Overall power and smoke was definately down, but the amount of smoke free power on the street went way up. Since I could get into it hard with very little smoke I found myself *accidently* breaking the rears loose =P

Then I went to the Tst comp by itself. Fuels to 3400 then falls on its face-almost sounds like a turbo bark when it hits 3400. Since it fuels based on boost it seemed really clean compared to kung fu, and just a bit darker smoke than sw0. Egts were up about 100 or so on hills. It feels like it keeps pulling throught the upper rpms while the smarty by itself would peak early and power would fall off.

Then I went to sw3 and the tst. A bit better responsiveness but not much. So I switched straight back to kung fu and holy cow this thing is explosive. I got the wow factor back that I had when I first got the smarty. It takes me longer to shift gears than burn through the rpms. I have to be careful not to smoke but this thing flies.

Even with how great drivability is with sw0, sw3, or tst at any setting, the tach swings fastest with sw9. Add in the tst and the powerband moves further into the rpms. The only thing about my combo is the aggressive low boost fueling combined with a 64/14 makes me drive with an eggshell under the throttle sometimes, but overall I'm pretty happy with the combo. One curiousity is the no boost spool. I'll be running down the road with no boost, but constant whistle. When I let off from zero boost it *still* takes a good ten seconds for the turbo to spool down

This weekend I get back on the rollers. Any predictions?

So I guess the answer is both?

Most definately both. I plugged my TST/Smarty back in today to do some mileage testing between the quad and the TST/Smarty and man I forgot how potent this combo was. The quad is nice but dang this is fun. I love breaking the tires loose at 70mph on wet roads.

I like the TST/Smarty stack on my 01. I drove with the smarty on 9 and the TST off. The TST was always on 9 and a flip of the switch away if I needed it.

I think I'm going to add the TST to my truck-- minus remote. I'll just get a PM3 and flick it off and on as needed.

I'm thinking that a regular PM3, TST, and Smarty is all the fuel an HO pump can give usefully.

I'd suspect you'd be around over 500 with a largish turbo, probably around 500 even with a more streetable unit.

I have been convinced the Smarty on #3 and TST full on is the fastest combo at the drag strip.... just better spoolup on the line! Last time I left the Smarty on #3, to get use to it, and daily drove with various TST settings.

Three weeks later, I went back to #5 on the Smarty and got the same back, that you (Ph4tty) mention! Just nothing like it around town! And with the TST for high end backup...it's a spectacular combo! So my answer is - definately both!
#7 & #9 (Smarty) are to sensitive for my size 13 right foot, especially since adding the Mach 6's two weeks ago.

Ph4tty, I think Sw9 on a manual truck is the most potent. It always felt that way to me via seat of the pants but I did some testing at the track a few weeks back. Started at 3, then 7, then 9. My best 8th mile times came with Smarty on 9. I know on an auto truck it appears you can run out of fuel on the top end so 3 is quicker on the strip (originally discovered by Mike D, then qualified by others with autos agreeing). My feeling is that on a manual truck that while shifting between gears, the pump has a chance to catch up. I don't feel like I run out of fuel on top either. I just think there are some inherent differences between the auto and manual trucks on settings of these boxes. Now with the prior said, I think my best times on the TST Comp were on 7. More testing is needed though. Hard to be consistent on a manual truck at the track.

Matt, You need to get to a 1/4 track to do some testing soon. I hear 13's are a nice number to run, but 12's are better...

Oh sure, rub it in "Mister I'm in the 12's now".... . I think I'd rape, kill, pillage and burn for 13's. We'll see. If you're insinuating that I have a chance to get into the 12's.......I don't think the moon's have or ever will align for that to happen. Heck, I was happy with my 8.90's in the 1/8th mile..........however I do want to get to Rockingham for the 1/4 to see how it translates. I think it's been well over a year since I've been to the 1/4 mile.

I am currently running some drinking straw Buddha smoke injectors and with the smarty on 9 i CAN NOT touch the throttle at all without smoke, i've tried driving slower than my grandma and it still blows smoke. Today the smarty is going down to 3, hopefully slowing that onslaught of fuel to the engine and allowing me to get on top of the charger before full fuel hits.

I literally can not even get 5psi around town without blacking out the road trying to light the charger. I'll report back my findings with these smoke monsters and SW3.

ALSO- I keep hearing all about everyone hating on the TST comp and its defueling, someone claims 2700, another 3000, ph4tty says 3400 and its dies...I have never had my TST just die off, it gets to 3400 and thats where it slowly and gradually calms down. My truck is 100% smooth from idle all the way to whatever rpm I feel brave enough to run it out to. And yes the power does drop off above 3400, but you can't hardly feel it. Besides, I have more of a problem with the truck falling flat at 117 than running out of RPMS with power.

I don't get the thrill of 1/8 mile racing?? But will be going this weekend! Big ODRA meet in the Dallas area! Guess I'll see what the 6's can do.
Best previous, with the Mach 4's was an 8.30/82.7...off a 1/4 mile slip.

Tiger, do you have to shift before the 60' mark? How many shifts in the 1/8? I'm going with XLR8R in his 05/6 speed and he was curious about all that....has not done 1/8 mile before, either.

Note: GB5.9 - Have seen 3800 rpm on my TST Comp??

Rowland, good luck at the track. I'll be interested to see what differences you get between the M4's and M6's.

As far as shifting. Again, it is hard to be consistent. Seems like my better times are when I consciously shift sooner. I've been launching lately in 3rd. Seems with the 410 gears I can do that without much strain after some practice. I'm usually shifting into 6th, just before the traps in the 1/8th. BTW, I like the 1/4 better too, it's just a longer drive to get to one.

(hey, wasn't that MY sig??)
You're giving me 7+ hp? Thanks. Watch for divides by zero threads in the future

TJ- turn the smarty back to stock and run just the tst and you'll see for yourself how many rpms it fuel to

Matt- I've recently discovered that this clutch/tranny does shift much faster in lower rpms. If you're shifting right before the traps you'd probably better off trying to strech 5th out. I can't beleive you have to shift to 6th in an 1/8, what are your trap speeds?

Edit- anyone think I'm nuts for wanting to try sw0 + tst

Generous guy...Huh?

I missed that myself....493 W/O TST! But the H-2 cam has me baffled on what to predict...also the HRVP. (does that count as a SO or HO)??
Most HO's I've seen on the dyno get nothing past #5 (reg TST).... which should be around 60 more HP.

What are you expecting... and yup, that's nuts!

I agree, the 1/8 is OK to run because it's close. I prefer the 1/4 myself. I think Rowland should see a 7.??? with the 6's.

The NO2 made hardly any difference for me at the 1/8, maybe a tenth.

I believe Phatty will be around the 525-535 corrected mark with the TST.

People thought I was nutz for running #3, right Phatty!
