smarty sr and towing ?
Hey guys this is my first post here but I've been reading on here for years. I just took my edge J/A out and put in the smarty sr. I added the gagues after switching chips. Well last weekend was the first time I got a chance to tow my 31' toy hauler thats about #12000 for the first time and on the way to the coast I had the smarty set on sw3 and the boost seamed to be allover the place. When you would get on it it would jump right up to about 32lb and then back of then it would end up around 25lb and the egt would start climbing. So when we got there I changed the chip to sw2 and tq4 and default on rp and tm. Then the boost would go right up to about 40 to 42lb but the egt's would go up really fast I was backing out of it at 1200* and my pyro is pre turbo. Is there something I'm doing wrong or can I run higher egt's or should I run timing or not I'm not sure?

Were you useing the right gear? (keeping the rpm's up). With 37's, & 12k behind you thats a lot of load.
Air filter clean? Not to be insulting, just need more info.

I'm pulling hills in 5th at about 1800 to 2000 rpms in 6th gear on the flats I'm runing around 1400 to 1500 rpms and the filter could use a cleaning but its not that bad at all.

i may not be completely correct but i would think you'd want to keep your rpms up a little more while towing. you may be lugging the motor. empty that rpm would be fine...IMHO

That is def your issue, 37's trying to pull loads up a hill under 2krpm. 5th gear is your 1:1 drive ratio so going back to it would be wise if you start getting under 1800rpm, 6th gear while it may not be lugging hard is still putting a good strain on your truck with a load, so you need to be cautious.
I've seen ppl shear 6th from heavy towing and racing, hot rodding, etc.

I personally don't like anything past 1400* Good thing is my trucks hottest * has been 1350*
But yes you need your gearing back if you are gonna tow. You would be a little better off with 35s but them 37's are alot lol!!!

The loss of boost I believe is caused by the wastegate soleniod sticking, boost goes to 30+psi, solenoid opens but is sticky causing the wastegate to stay open causing low boost. I see it on my truck all the time started out only occasionally now does it almost all the time. I'm going to add a manual pressure regulator between the solenoid and wastegate to stop it from doing that. You will see the lowest egts when towing between 2000-2400 rpms, above or below that and the egts are going to be higher how high depends on load and throttle. My truck will hit 1400 on stock setting when towing and it downshifts reving the engine over 2800.

A lower gear ratio in the axles would be a definite improvement, but you should at least run in 4th then, & keep the rpm's above 2000. I can climb grades in O/D @ 2050 rpm weighing 12,500 gross with my camper on, but a little head wind will make my EGT climb, & I'll drop into T/H mode, & keep my speed @ 2800 rpm. I don't like to keep EGT above 1200* for very long, & I downshift if it approaches 1250*-1275* on a grade.

Got a 6 speed, just keep your rpms up. You have full control. Don't worry if your running 2500rpm, it can handle it. You will notice your egts cooling down. If your towing heavy prime rpm is 2000 and up.
I agree sometimes a cummins seems high strung, you just have to get past the fact that these arent ultra low rpm quick to redline rigs. 3500 rpms is a pretty good feat for a straight six, nevermind 5,000rpms lol

With my JR and mods I haven't seen over 1250F and pulled some heavy loads up some good grades. 1800rpm and a good load downshift and keep her under 2500. My truck seems to hold real good ~2000rpm. The torque is awesome. My stock clutch has held up too. I am adding ~100hp over stock so on your newer truck you can add 80hp or so and you should be safe.
