Smarty S-06 POD or Edge Juice with attitude?
I've looked through many programmer posts, but can't make up my mind. Do I go with just a Smarty POD programmer or the Edge Juice with attitude? I have a stock 2005 Ram 2500 4x4, QC, LB, with 5.9 cummins, automatic transmission. I will be pulling a 16' trailer loaded with about 5K lbs of toys from Alaska to Oregon, plus I'd like a little better performance around town. I like the Edge because of the 5 different "on the fly" settings, plus the monitor has EGT, boost and several other gauge options, but am not that familiar with the Smarty. Both are priced about the same. Please let me know your thoughts, thanks.

I have had both, and I think the smarty is a better performance box, hands down. Both have their pros and cons.
If you are not looking for a lot of power, just towing and a little more economy, the smarty jr may be right for you.
The edge is not a bad box, though. It has a lot of options with the gauges and turbo timer, however, I do not feel that the power is as smooth, and it runs higher egt's than the smarty does, hp for hp.
Look in the classifieds, I think that there was a used edge in there a few days ago. There are a few smarty's in there from time to time, too.
I have a thread with vids on the edge vs smarty... I'll look for it if you like.
This post just touches the surface on what I know about the two. Please feel free to ask for more specifics, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Good luck with your choice.

Well i can honestly say that i wouldn't have the Edge J/A if it wasn't for the gauges. It was on my truck when i bought it. The Smarty is a better performing box with better EGTs and power. If you plan on getting the Smarty please do yourself a favor and get some gauges.

I just swapped my edge J/A for a Smarty POD and couldnt be happier
that being said the added cost of gauges is something to think about and like was said above its not a good idea to run a programmer without gauges
the Edge isnt a bad box it does run a little warm, that being said the turbo timer is really nice for long hauls...

I Have a smarty non pod had it on my 06. I just set it on 3 and run all the time. Truck never saw above 1400 degrees pulling the hills around oregon with my 25 foot trailer. Mileage I gained about .83 with it on. I can say .83 because I use a spread sheet with every gallon of fuel I put in the truck.

I have had them both also. If you are happy with just marginal gains and don't want to bomb your truck stay with an edge. If you grow out of it as I did, I got the s06 and would not go back.

I have about 50k on the truck with the Juice and Attitude. Before that I used an Edge Insight to monitor the trucks functions.
I use the juice for towing mostly. I run the #2 setting, advertised at 730 ft/lbs of torque. I have made tranny mods to handle the torque while towing at 23,000 + lbs combined. I usually run up to tow speed in the stock position and at tow speed engage the Juice. Once that is done, it does not downshift, just goes up the hill. EGT's will get to 1300 after about two miles up a hill. I use the cruise to tap down the speed which reduces EGT's for awhile. Thats at 63 mph. Running 70 mph on a hill similar to the 63 mph run, EGT's don't get over 1225 degrees, so RPM's do make a difference. Turbo boost is around 32 to 38 psi depending on R's.
I see no sense in putting all that torque on a tranny not designed to handle the extra power all the time, which is what happens with the Smarty. (48RE) I run the Juice on the #1 position when driving without the fiver on the interstate.
I make no claims for mileage since I have a turbo wing on the truck and it is a lot of drag when not towing. Mileage towing is 11.5 to 12.3. Best ever was 12.7. Good fuel.
If I were to try the smarty, I would reinstall the Insight which reads 16 differant engine functions in sets of 4.
(a little off topic)
If I get another fiver it will be in the area of 16,500 GVW to 17,000. I will change the rear to 4:56 and run the #3 position on the Juice/At which is advertised at 780 ft/lbs of torque. With the 3:73's the Juice/At shown a 76% load when towing. The 4:10's dropped the load to 54%.
So the 4:56's should do a little to get some of the load off the tranny.
