smarty or edge juice?

Ok all, I am looking to do some mods. I was really leaning twards the smarty, but saw that i can get the edgr juice with monitor that would elliminate the need for guages? Would there be any needs for more guages or will the monitior cover all of them?

Also I plan on adding some trans mods. in the near future so I could run this on low settings till then, and I see the edge can add lots of HP/TQ.

Pros/Cons?

Thanks in advance.

The smarty makes better power but I like the clean look of the edge with the gauges built in and the ability to be able to change the power settings on the fly. Especially nice when towing.

Cost is about the same but the Smarty will need gauges on top of it.

Check to see whats included with the Edge. On my '01 it included a tranny temp gauge but not so on my '03. I thought I heard they added it back for the 04.5-05s though.

cLAYH, It says you can monitor Backdown%, Engine load %, RPM, MPH, Boost, Engine temp, Barometric temp, Therottle Position, Transmition lock, Transmition slip & Intake pressure. This is under the '05' models.

Is there any other guages I would need?

smalltowTPull, Why edge on cummins = YUK ?

Thanks for the help.

• Backdown %
• EGT (exhaust gas temp)
• Engine Load %
• RPM
• Speed MPH
• Boost
• Engine Temperature
• Barometric Temperature
• Throttle position
• Transmission Lock
• Transmission Slip
• Intake Temperature

This is what I got off the Edge site. What you really NEED are EGT, boost and tranny temp. It doesn't look the Edge does tranny temp for 05. When you start to really get into the performance stuff fuel pressure and rail pressure are good to have as well.

If you aren't looking for a huge power increase you could buy just a no frills box that adds 30-50hp and not worry about gauges.

I had EJWA on my 2000 and power gains were moderate and EGT's were High.
someone on here has a couple of vids on here at the strip, edge was slower in the 1/4 and egt's were extreme, smarty was faster and ran cooler.

the adjust on the fly is the only feature i liked about it. Gauges are more functional and better looking IMO. but to each his own.

Boost EGT and tranny temp are most important.

my buddy just about got smoked by a stock 6.4 ford the other night. he has EJWA hot unlock level 6( twins, sticks and alot of other mods) he was getting so much backdown it was sick. then he turned backdown off and i saw his egt's go to 2200 deg...... i was scared she was going to melt down right there.

now he's trading it off on a 6.4 ford F350...... unfortunatly

when i got my 06 there was no question which proggy i was going with.

I've got both the Edge Juice/Attitude (hot unlock) and the Smarty POD. Yes the Juice is sure easy to switch between the different power levels and seems to have plenty of power and is great around town The Smarty on the other hand has all the power you need plus it will give you increased mileage when you load the odd numbered increased timing programs. I honestly believe I get nearly 2 more mpg's when using it although maybe I'm just more throttle conscious when it's loaded.
The Smarty POD doubles as a diagnostic tool as well letting you read and clear trouble codes, input tire size changes and unlock the top speed limiter. Plus MADS is pretty good about updating their software and it's available to be downloaded free. But the Juice's gauge feature with it's backdown abilty is also hard to overlook.
No to be "wishy washy" but they both have some good features but I must caution you to go ahead and do the tranny mods or you'll disappointed when you burn it up. Also never run compounded timing, (both units pushing increased timing), or you can easily melt down your pistons.
I would probably bite the bullet and in this order:
1 - Add at least a EGT and Boost guage.
2 - Do the tranny mods. (If you play, you'll eventually pay).
3 - Buy the Smarty POD because its a diagnostic tool, a performance programmer and gives you a mileage increase.

Just my 2 cents.

Edge EZ helped me get the numbers in the signature box on the 04.5 coupled with the SMARTY. I can't comment on the EJWA, as I have never owned one. Search the boards to get an idea of some of the theories associated with this tuner and bad things happening to engines.

My two bits in terms of gauges, I never want mine tied to a tuner. I know there are benefits like reduced cost, and taking up less space, etc. BUT, the gauges are there to tell me how the engine is doing and what the tuner is doing to it. IMHO - keeping them separate is a good thing, as if something is up with the tuner, then the same thing applies to it's gauges.

Have had the EJWA for almost 4 years. The last while i noticed it would spike higher egts than normal under load and defaulted to old settings.I could not clear off the old settings except by disconnecting the unit for a few hours, then individually erasing all old settings one at a time.Reset it and now runs cool under load.Unless you want crazy power, this is a nice tuner for ease of use and lots of go.

Ok I have made my mind up, I am going with my original thoughts. Smarty POD. will be orderd this week! along with gauges.
Also I know I better take it easy with the power till trans. mods. are done and I will. Besides I about have the wife talked into the trans mods. for christmas.....
Then the next big purchase will be pac brake.
Thinking of deleting muffler and adding S&B filter when ordering the smarty.

Thanks for all the advice and help!
