Sloppy steering on '08 w/ 17K miles

Hey everybody:

The last couple of days the steering on my '08 mega 4X4 feels weird. It takes more effort to keep it on track and it doesn't want to center as easily as it used to.

I will take it to the dealer to have them take a look, but thought I'd solicit opinions or suggestions from the learned members of DTR.

TIA.

Bad tire maybe? Popped any good curbs lately?

It's due for a rotation and could probably use an alignment, so I'm gonna try that first. I'll take a good look at all of the tires while they're off.

The steering gear box went out on both the 05 and 06 trucks I have owned. The symptoms you describe are similar to the ones I had. The 05 went out at 17K miles and the 06 went out at around 35k miles.

My '07 had the steering box and tie rod ends replaced before 10k mi (before I bought it). Steers tight now, have the dealer look at it.
Unless you really smacked something with a front wheel, I don't see how your alignment could be off.

Well, my wife reminded me that we have a friend who runs a tire shop and for whom, coincidentally, I just got a ticket fixed. So, I dropped by his shop and he rotated the tires. When he put it in their super-wazoo optical camera alignment machine they couldn't move either front wheel by hand....even when of the ground...locked up tight...balljoint(s) kaput!

I dropped it at the dealer who started to give me grief about the leveling kit. I said you've heard of Moss-Mag, right? So explain to me how changing the coils ruined the ball joints! The service writer said "Oh, the new springs don't touch the ball joints?" I said "I hope not!" He says, no problem we'll start on it first thing in the morning.

Ding, ding, ding....we have a winner! It was the steering gear box. The good news is I dropped it off at 5:30 on Friday night and it was ready at 1:00 Saturday afternoon, including an oil change.

WOW, where do you live ? Las Vegas dealers are great!!
Up here they closed service friday at 4:00pm and if you don't take your truck then you will get it back next monday. They definitely don't work on saturday.

Yeah, my dealer's service department is pretty good. Usually it is first come-first served on Saturdays, but they let me leave it Friday night and got going on it first thing Saturday morning. I think they're open until 6:00 every night, except the whole dealership is closed on Sundays (state law). It sure beats dropping it off on a weekday morning and figuring out how to get to work and back for two days!
