Silencer ring removal
I know that this is a trivial question, but by removing the silencer ring, do you create a larger delta P loss of inlet air at the turbo inlet??? I am an air conditioning contractor and know that many manufacturers of A/C equipment manufacture fan inlets with a slight venturi to decrease the pressure drop of the entering air at the fan wheel. This has a 2 step effect in straightening inlet airflow, thusly reducing inlet pressure loss and decreasing horsepower required to move a determined airflow.
I know that removing the silencer ring creates a louder spooling up/down sound from the turbo, but by doing so reduce horsepower by any measurable amount or affect fuel consumption by the same????
Inquiring minds sometimes wander aimlessly, and any input on this would put my wandering mindlessness to bed...LOL ;D ;D ;D

Re:Silencer ring removal
everything I have read on the silencer ring says there is no gain or loss, just a 747 under the hood without it. I have mine out and I am kinda enjoying the noise and the crazy looks I get when passing someone in 4th gear and wound up. I turn up the radio just a tad bit on trips and it goes away, except for on hard accelerations. ;D

Dodge is the only user of Holset turbos that have put a silencer ring in them.
Every other Holset turbo out there doesn't have the ring.
Customer comfort would be the reason.
I guess there are some people out there that don't like the sound of the turbo without it.
Mine fell out over a year ago.
First "BOMB" I did actually.

Re:Silencer ring removal
I still have my silencer ring.
Its been sitting in the top shelf of my tool box now for about a year and a half.
I have to admit, Ive got the quietest toolbox in the neighborhood! ;D
Since removing the silencer ring, I gained nothing more than noise. (Which is, after all, the whole purpose).

Re:Silencer ring removal
Thanks for the input gentlemen.
I have removed it and I do like the sound difference. Can't wait to get a load on it and crank it up!!!

I think you need intake and/or exhaust mods to hear much change by removing the ring. I yanked mine and can't really hear the difference.

I pulled mine back when I still had the stock airbox and stock filter, couldn't really hear anything unless you really listened for it.
Since ditching that questionable setup, and getting the BHAF, you can almost hear it spinning at idle.

I rode in MYTURNx3's truck and she has it removed with a K&N cone filter. That thing whistles beautifully! I can't wait until I win a Scotty Air.

Ring gone, scotty II with hole cut = MUSIC! I love it, you can hear it at idle and mellow cruise, pulling a hill! Forgetaboutit! Sings prettier than any bird I ever heard! ;D

Re:Silencer ring removal
Well Daze, if you have the most quiet toolbox in the neighborhood, I had the most quiet garbage can in town until the gentlemen put it in the back of the garbage truck!
Just one word of note, gotta get rid of the stock air box contraption to truly enjoy the new music.
Oh, and my radio is for sale also! 8)

Re:Silencer ring removal
Well, I ditched the K&N that was there and went to a BHAF... Definitely can feel the power diff by having more filter available. The singing bird now chirps a bit louder too.... Hopefully the exhaust system is next.... Cummins' baby for 17K miles then its all mine...
