Silencer ring question

After the snap ring, is the silencer ring I guess. It's tapered or beveled and it looks like it's guiding the air flow from a large dia. to a smaller dia. to were it goes into the fan blades. Only my thought . Question is with the tapered spacer out will the air flowing into the turbo be just as efficient ? I assume the fan in the turbo has to pull air from the breather. This is my first diesel and I'm not sure of anything.

Re:Silencer ring question

nope, silencer ring serves no purpose at all except to "silence" the turbo.

to my knowledge they arent even in ISB in larger vehicles

sure someone else will chime in with a more technical explanation but u definately wont hurt anything by taking it out

p.s. one thing to consider is warranty, there was a thread awhile back debating this, not really sure of its outcome so might wanna do a search

Re:Silencer ring question

Holset Turbo does not use that ring in their turbo's for any other applications...it was put in at dodge's request only to help quiet it down...you only hear a small difference in sound w/ the stock air box...give it a try, it's quick and free. As for the warranty thing im not really sure.

Re:Silencer ring question

A dealer would have to be pretty ridiculous to void a turbo warranty because the silencer ring was missing (but I suppose its possible). I would think a lot of DC mechanics wouldnt know if it was there or not.

Re:Silencer ring question

At 95,000 miles my injector pump went out and I had it replaced under warranty and nothing was said about the missing silencer ring. I don't know how they could void your warranty by removing it, since Dodge is the only vehicle that uses it on the Cummins.

Re:Silencer ring question

If you remove the snap ring to get the silencer ring out, use caution. It bends out of shape easily, and then if you do not like the added noise, and want to re-install the silencer ring, you may have to find a new snap ring!

I had my silencer ring out til the first time I crossed the continental divide...the whine was unbearable for me.

Re:Silencer ring question

The only warrynty issues I heard of with the silencer ring removed were about turbo damage on the compressor side. I think that the mech assumed that the blades were damaged during removal of the ring, which if true IMHO wouldn't be something to warrant.

Just my 2c
