should i trade Cummins for a HD F-150?

i need to cut my bills, and a buddy said he might trade me. he owes ~10k less on his truck than I owe on mine.

i never use the diesel, and I got stuck last time i tried to creep down a dirt road.

really, all I really use is the quad cab for carrying family around.

and the bed is too high (with the OR pkg) to load anything into.

only problem, is his 02 HD F-150 quadcab supercharged 5.4 with a tonneau cover gets ~12 mpg. ouch.

40k miles on his, 21k on mine.
his is the ugly gray color too, with the red flame down side

i think gas cost would eat up my $$ faster

Your insurance man, the local gasoline retailer, and your tire dealer will be very happy for you to make the change.

Won't be long and you'd be doing the O2 sensors, belt, tensioner, PCV, brakes. Tires are probably half spent, are the spark plugs rated for 100,000 miles? When is the warranty gone? Just my opinion, but I think a truck made to be worked and driven like a car, will last longer than the truck made to be driven like a car. Different engine than our 95 so I'll leave that one out of it. But then again, I had issues with my Chevy gasser too. It got problematic with fewer miles on it than my Cummins had when I got it. Haven't touched the engine yet for anything other than a valve lash check with new seals, and pump tweaks. Had the turbo rebuilt, but not so sure it needed it.

I don't think that I would make the trade ... just my 02 worth. I see a lot of Fords ... pickups, Mustangs and SUV's in my shop with nickle and dime problems (power window motors, belt tensioners, water pumps, O2 sensors etc...). I truly think that the quality control at Ford is lacking. The older trucks were rock solid though !!!

I would look at other options to trim my bills ... have you looked at consolidation loans or transferring your bills to one low interest credit card ?? Some of the rates can make it worth while.

I hate to see you get rid of a good truck.

I'd sell the SS and pay down the CTD. Those Supercharged 5.4Ls are nice and quick (ala Lightening). The super-crew makes them practical - so they are easier to justify to a wife, even to yourself. The fuel though won't improve with grandpa driving. 15mpg will be the bets you'll ever get. Stand on it and you bee looking at 8mpg. Gotta feed the those horses rather they're in the barn or not. I've got 91k on my `00 Mustang, suspension is real sloppy now. It creaks and rattles much more. Drive train lash is more. Already replaced the 4 O2 sensors, yes 4 of them - went from 17mpg back to 19.5. Price out tires, mine are consistantly gone in 20-25k miles (stickyness gone in 15k miles). I just buy the ok cheap-o's for $125 each. There is a difference, they don't hook up as good as the BFG G-Force KDs, but at 1/2 the price I'll deal with it. Price a set of meats for that truck Ford mechanics (dealers) that will be honest with you will say the engines are good for 160k miles. They are right so far. My 4.6L is now having cold start problems, rough ideling intermittantly, and other nickle/dime stuff. None of it is expensive alone but the problems are continuous. Fix one thing another breaks. Crate, turn-key engines are only $4k though with all accessories already mounted. Wait, it has a supercharger, better make that $9-10k (Cobra crate motors are $11k w/supercharger). That Eaton wares out in the 120k mile range - but they're junk and should be replaced with one of the after-market jobs that push 21-23PSI, wait, you are concerned about fuel economy... That would add more horses to your barn, that you would have to feed rather you're using them or not. BS to that effeceintcy = fuel economy myth the perf part suppliers tell you. They are right and not lying to you. You WILL get bettet economy then before but now you can't keep your foot out of it!!! I don't care how fast something may seem at first. Once you get used to it, it will seem slow/normal and you begin to drive it hard normally. You won't be racing everything that pulls up beside you like when you first got it but you will just drive it harder because you are more comfortable and confident with the vehicle.

You already got an SS (I'm guessing Camero). That truck will eat a stock 320 hp SS (that's based on the Lightening and this truck having the same engine). You would be throwing away all that utility, fuel economy, etc. for a "go-fast" daily driver, you already have one of those, the SS.

Just my 2 cents. The CTD will be paid for eventually and still running strong. The F-150 will be 80-90% used up by then, depending on your annual mileage. You'll wind up with another car payment in repairs, for a while until you replace all the wear items. They rape you for that HD badge too. Put HD stickers on your CTD and call it a special ed. - you'll be better off.

I love my Mustang and am not going to get rid of it. It's going to become our weekend toy. I bought my CTD so I can take the Mustang down for a week at a time and replace all the wear parts and fix all the little bugs. Breaking the tail loose at 50+ mph is just plain FUN But now I can afford for something to break on it because I got a CTD that'll be there to get me to work in the morning. So no matter if the engine blows or the tranny shatters (got the wimpy T-45 rated at 325 ft/lbs - engine is 307 stock) - it doesn;t matter. I'll push it into the garage and fix it when I'm ready and when I have the money (with faster better stuff, but that's besides the point).

You have a truck that you can literally hand down to your kids. It'll still be running and in great working order. You have the heaviest drivetrain Dodge makes and unless you towing 15k lb loads off road up hill all the time you'll never wear it out. Don't believe me? Look up the price for a used Dana 60 front axle (disc-to-disc) - that is weakest part of your drive train if you off-road the CTD. And a Dana 60 is the strongest, most sought after front axle by off-roaders. Now price out a used Dana 60 out of the tail of that F-150. Not really apples to apples but the point is the parts alone off a worn out CTD are more valuable than new F-150 parts. People won't even blink about buying a $1000, 30yo D-60 front axle with drums needing a rebuild. Look at the market for 2-3 yo Lightenings and HD F-150s with 50k miles. Put it more into perspective: Price out that F-150 HD truck when it's 5yo, paid off and has 80k+ miles on the clock. Now price a 7-8yo CTD with the same miles (that's a trick question - Find a used CTD with under 100k miles).

Well I'm gettin long winded... It's your choice, as long as it's an informed one and you're happy with the results - don't feel like you setteled - thein it'll be the right on.

Good luck!

No Kidding....think about resale value in five or six years....the gasser will be worth nothing. Find a lightly used second gen, save some money, and drive it

you guys are nuckin futz. good points, esp Fastzilla.

the SS is mama's toy, 42k on it, red with tan convertible, m6, ~375hp or so.

i'll not be doing anything fun if I get rid of it.
tried to trade both CTD and SS for a C5 last week, she said C5 was not as cool as her car.

I got ~17mpg towing last nite with a new tonneau cover, and dragging a 95 eclipse on a tow dolly.

you guys are rite. the F-150 would be junk in a few years.

you know, what I REALLY LIKE about the Cummins 4x4 QC is the ability TO DO ANYTHING. you can haul folks, you can off road a bit, and you can/tow/drag/pull most anything. I just like the capability to do what I want, when I want. I hate borrowing stuff.

i took the CTD to the CSO (chasn Symphony orchestra) last week, and 2 kids were walking by "hey that's an OFF ROAD truck...way cool" and her BF said "oh it's a cummins too....now that's a truck!"

okay, so there, who wants a nice 04 Black V-rod?

I was gonna ask about that $20,000 motorcycle....

I'd sell that, keep the truck (simple usefullness analysis will bear that out) and then when you get money back in shape, go get a new toy (bike).
