I have DD2s and an EZ for fuel. I have read that the stock 12cm housing is the biggest air restriction in the stock setup. Should I upgrade to the 16cm housing? I know it's slower spooling, but won't the top end be stronger, and have lower EGT?

The 16cm housing is non-wastegated. And it's cheap, too ($150).

I am right near the ragged edge of the stock air setup (intake, turbo, and exhaust), and I am seeking a cheap improvement....

FYI, I am probably around 330-340 RWHP.

If you plan on staying where you are the 16 will help. But if you paln on going to higher HP levels I would save the $150.00 and save for a PDR HX40-16 or an equal turbo that will last to a higher HP level than the HX35-16. If you want the 16cm housing a lot of us have 16's on a shelf in the garage.

The 16 cmsq turbo housing will make an improvment over the 12, I made the same change only 6 months ago. What I have noticed is 1.) a reduction in EGT temps, about 100 on a long pull. 2.)Lower boost levels at normal driving speeds, where I use to be at 10, now 5. 3.)I do not notice any slower acceleration from a stop, or at any certain speed. It seems to spool-up very fast, I can not detect any lag. 4.) There is a different sound from the tail pipe, less of the wirling noise from the turbo ( I miss it). 5.) With the bigger housing there is less temp differential between pre and post EGT.
Like the last post noted, if you are not going much more with reguard to HP, then this is fine. Other wise, save for the bigger turbo.

Dont waste your money.
Buy a 40 hybrid, or get one of the new popular turbos that are available(so you can up your power with nice results).
Or you could always just dyno 500hp with a PDRhx40 (45psi and still alive).
I am afraid your truck will be a lag dog with the turbine housing you are wanting to add.
You dont need a larger turbo (or turbine housing)with your current setup.

Hey guys, on the same subject here. I have been told the stock HX35/12 is good til 35-37psi. Then it losses it's efficiency after that.
Would changing to a 16cm housing up it's efficiency? If so, to how much more boost?

Just an aside to this discussion.....if you'll permit me...

An HX35 can be pushed to roughly 35-38psi and still run "fairly well".
At 40 psi boost an HX35/12 will be seeing rougly 72psi drive pressure. That is too high and is certainly causing high boost air temps as well as EGT rise, with those two factors feeding off one another.... Generally speaking, for each 1*F of ambient air intake temp increase, exhaust temps increase 3*F.

For comparison sake, the same turbo above but using a 16cm housing will have approx. 45psi drive pressure at the exhaust housing inlet,... better, but still high (40psi boost/45psi drive).

An HX40/16 with 46psi boost (sorry haven't done a comparison at 40psi boost) will show approx. 40psi drive pressure (and that is with 6psi more boost than the first comparison) ... so now you have 46psi boost/40psi drive press, getting better.

Our PDR HX 40's are 'gated at 38-40psi. That keeps the pressures in check, the EGT's reasonable (usable) and, helps hold off compressor stall or shaft issues.

On my truck right now, using a PDR HX35/16, I can bang up to 43-44 psi almost instantly, but I am well into the "not good" range for the HX35/16 I'm running.
I should either go with an 18.5cm housing or step up to the HX40/16, with the latter being more effective for my current and future planned use.

35 psi for an hx35 with any turbine housing is at its upper limits of effeciency.
The advantage of the larger turbine housing is that you will have less back pressure, and lower egts under WOT situations.
Also less boost if you are running over 35 psi.

What are the pros/cons of the hybrid over a PDR40? I have been told the hybrids have the tougher turbine section while still giving the good spool, and since the compressor is the same as an HX40, EGTs should be comparable, no?

I like the PDR40--- it's practically the official TDR turbo! But I don't want to follow like a (black) sheep, and would like to maybe do some original thinking. By the time I get the $$, the ball bearing turbos will be out and I will wish I would have waited.

Why spend all the money on the turbo's and still not have what you are looking for. I was runnin 405 HP and changed to a 14 housing.The spool up was just a quick and the egt's dropped 150 degrees. I really don't feel the need for all the latest "super duper" turbo spinner mental. The HX 35 is a very good turbo.The real control is your foot. When I'm towing,true I can get the egt's up,but my foot is the controlling factor. I tow around 900-1050, but the cool down time has been cut in half. Always buy what you want but that my not be what you need. Don't spend money just to keep up with the J............s
