should the fan be running when the engine is cold?
I was out scraping my windows this morning and noticed that the fan was on. should it be running when the engine is cold?

That's normal. The fan never stops spinning unless the engine is shut down. Mine roars until third gear and then releases on cold mornings. As long as it releases and quietens down after you start going up through the gears, it is normal.

Now I thought the fan would mysteriously come on when needed according to temperature, by use of a clutch. I know when it's hot out and I'm pulling a load the fan will come on with authority, run for a while until the temp decreases, shut off, come back on etc. It will cycle on and off or if it's hot enough it will stay on.

Yours looks alot PRETTIER than mine does!
The fan is on all the time, but the fan clutch determines how fast it will spin according to the temp.

I left my fan off at rebuild been from here to the east coast over the passes several times (I watch it close) been about 4 months now...been towing about 10,000 lbs. So far no fan required.
