should I buy it
I have a chance of buying a 97 2500 4x4 w/ 380000 miles on it it seemed to run ik but does need a little work. body is spotless but the interior is trashed. I am probably going to get it for around $500.00, should I take the chance.

If that is really $500 not $5000 you shouldn't even be online you should be signing the title and going to the DMV by now.
At the price you posted that isn't a chance at all, that is a steal.

"The Contrarian..." pardon me a moment but I feel compelled to take up this role just for this situation. First off, where did you see this? if it's an online ad such as traderonline.com, you may be in for a nasty suprise such as a SCAM. They are all over the place. I would proceed with caution.
Secondly, if it's really a too good to be true situation, it probably is. Perhaps a worn-out engine (although 380k on a 5.9 ins't usually enough to wear it out) or a shoddily rebuilt truck (with or without a rebuilt title) or a flood victum of katrina. I would carfax the VIN # (does it have one?) and perhaps even have it looked over at a repair shop. Your $500 could buy you $5000 worth of trouble, then again if the engine itself still runs it's worth more than $500.
Sorry, but posts with very few details and specifics give an odd, slightly fishy smell to me. "How long do the 12v last?" It depends entirely upon it's use and it's maintance. In my case, over 325k and runing strong. But keeping it up isn't cheap and I've generally found that knowing the costs associated with a major purchase such as a vechile ahead of time keep one from being unpleasently suprised down the road.

The truck was a repo and I know the lady at the bank. They don't think its worth anything. The truck feels tight, body is clean, 4wd works, but the engine blows white smoke for about the first 10min. All I think it needs is a tune up 2 new tires and some front brakes.

Parts are worth way more than what they are asking. Especially if everything works and the body is good. You better jump on it because I am sure you aren't the only one they told about it.
At that price you could do a light overhaul if needed and still be ahead.
Why doesn't this happen to me.....!?!?
Thanks 96 12V for bringing us back down to earth with the scam stuff. It is way too common and you are right most things that sound to good to be true usually are.

But some things to consider. With that many miles pretend the engine is trashed and will have to be rebuilt soon. A decent used/rebuilt 12v engine runs about $4500 + labor, transmission runs another couple grand. Add that to the cost of the truck plus the interior. It's not a lot of miles for an engine that was taken care of but you never know what you're buying. I would still buy it cause then with under $10k I would build myself a brand new high performance machine! Or I could always re-sell it and get at least my 500 bux back.
