Should I be able to move the driveshaft up and down?

In the carrier bearing housing that is. The U-joints all seem fine but I get a slight vibration between 60-62mph and when I was under the truck yesterday I could move the driveshaft assembly up and down a bit inside that housing. It's the rubber mounts that have the play in them though, not the connection.
What do you guys think?

the rubber mounts are normally like that, you probably have a u joint going out......when you check the u joints make sure the truck is in neutral, the park brake off and the wheels blocked..........

Yeah, the rubber support around the carrier is very soft. Mine was and still is very pliable.

Zilla,
My center bearing is shot. I can move the shaft up and down in the center bearing at least 1/2-3/4 of an inch. The rear joint is toast, so, I have a one piece shaft from Dodge ordered and on the way. Hopefully it will get rid of all my vibration issues, plus, a one piece just makes way more sense to me !

I've thought of going that route too but I really don't want to spend that money right now. Let me know how it works out for you.

With 3 new quality U-Joints and a carrier bearing you are half way to the cost of a new one piece. That assumes you do all the work your self. I replaced all three joints on my rear shaft before I knew about the one piece, when the joints go again or the carrier bites the dust a one piece is in my future.

I'm still under warranty so it may not cost me anything to get this repaired. I just hate going to the dealership. I DO need to get in there to get my door locks looked at though....

The one piece drive shaft from" Dog House diesel performance" is the best mod you could ever make. You will think youhave a different truck. Replacing all the U joints plus the center carrier bearing yoy are close to the cost of a one piece.

What is the difference it how it makes it feel like a different truck? Im planning to do this at some point....im just curious why it feels different than before.......say with new u-joints/carrier bearing.......vs. the 1 piece. Thanks.

It just completly smooths the truck out. It gets rid of vibrations you did'nt know you had.The drive line just has a more direct feel with no slop.

I had slop in my carrier bearing assy, had vibrations, had wheel hop too. Priced out replacing all the joints - no brainer to add a few bucks and get rid of the 2-piece for a 1-piece. I have quite a few miles on the 1-piece replacement, no more vibrations, no more wheel hop - best mod I have done.

If/when I need new joints on the 1-piece, the cost to replace them is a fraction of the others on the 2-piece.

This is what I did, and it stoped my low speed shutter. My u joints and carrier looked fine too but there was something wrong with them.

Man! I don't need to spend $550 on a driveshaft but it would be nice getting rid of some problematic parts....
