Shelf Life of Motor Oil

I have 4 gallons of Delo 15-40 that has been in the garage for a year and half. Is it okay to use in the Dodge? Is there any kind of shelf life on motor oil?

Thanks in advance...

Never heard of a shelf life for motor oil. Have seen some oils that allow materials to settle out. Just shake it up and use it.

If it had a shelf life, it would have a use by date on it.

There was a change of formulas in 06 from CI-4+ to CJ-4 to work with the ULSD. Other than that, I don't necessarily think there is a problem using oil that is a few years old. Right now I am trying to find/use the CI-4+ because of its better performance in test results.

I stocked up on Chevron Delo 400 CI-4+ and spoke to a Chevron product manager. He said Chevron recommends using their oil within 5 years. But, he said if kept sealed and out of the sun, it would be ok well beyond that.

That's what amsoil told me - 5 years. I bet sunlight might cause condensation to form inside the bottles. If you could get away with storing it in the house where the temp is pretty much constant year round it's probably good to go forever. I wouldn't think twice about using oil that's only been sitting around for a year and a half. Mine for the next oil change has probably been sitting around that long. I bought up a bunch of delo intended for the next several changes that was cheaper than usual about a year or so ago.

Yea, I got a bunch of Delo I purchased about a year ago when I went looking for CI-4+. I won't even think twice about using it for the next year or two.

I sent a bottle back to Amsoil because it had sludge in the bottom of the bottle. I thought I had it for about 5 years, but the told me that it was made about 10 yrs ago if I recall correctly.
They said the oil was good to go, and that it was the dye that had settled out of the oil and that is what was on the bottom.
They sent me a new bottle no problem.
Amsoil has great customer service!
