Serious timing questions
Alright , initially i thought the timing had slipped on my 95 , fuel milage sucks , no top end power , etc etc , but now i'm not to sure , what are the symptoms of too much timing?
I notice on cold starts -5 it blows smoke rings out of the exhaust (i have only ever noticed 2 at the most per day), i know that is a sign of very advanced timing in sled pulling tractors , but is it just fluke in my cummins? It also runs VERY rough , compared to the 97 (on cold start) , i don't even need to use the grids to fire it up at that temp, it just goes. on the highway i'm lucky to get 2300 rpm , it just won't pull itself.
Does this sound like a possible o/f valve gone bad too?
I am going to order the timing kit from snap on , and do the timing , then pull the cover and tackle everyones favourite dowel pin.

I dont know much about the second gens, but I advanced the timing on my truck and it does seem to run rougher in the cold and it too blows a couple smoke rings. I cycle the grids twice and it still starts kind of hard and runs rough for a little bit. It also takes quite a while for the smoke to clear up.

ur timing is probably retarted...blowing smoke at cold temps like that is normal thats what a diesel engine does when cold...not being able to get above 2300rpms could be a stretched out throttle cable and timing slip...first take the slack out of the cable where u at the foot peddle then see what happens
a stretched throttle cable is common with trucks 10 years old

I can get above 2300 rpms , in 1st and 2nd , once 3rd and o/d hit , she just doesn't have the power for more rpms.
If it is blowing smoke rings now , what makes you think the timing is retarded?
I gotta wait till my car sells so i have some $$ then i'll splurge for the timing kit and see just exactly whats going on.
