What is the sensor by the AC evaporator?

When I replaced my evap and core, I noticed a white block that must be a sensor of some sort by the evaporator core. Can anybody tell me what that thing does?

If it was mounted in the air stream in the heater plenum then it's the fan speed resistor block. It's what gives the fan different speeds.
