Smile Seal question...

Hi Guys

This vacume pump is getting the best of me ... Heres what we got ... I few weeks ago I did the front seal on my veacume pump ... There was a noticeable grove in the power steering out put shaft ... where the seal would ride .

So I did the seal ...with the new viton seal ...It leaked ...LOL , So went and order and installed the new power steering pump ... every thing looked fine for a day or so ... it had a nice oil drop in the same area ...its not leaking any where like it was but its not right .

I inspected the pump seal befor assembling and the seal looked fine ... no signs of the seal being worn or torn .

So should I tear the vacume pump out and put a new seal in or let it drip and maybe it might seat it self .

Are some seals know to leak at first ... I have not put many miles on it since doing the new pump .

Thanks

Greg

Smile Re : to my seal

Hi Guys

I have been dealing with a company in philly today about the seals ... the international seal and packing company part # 28x38x7av ... that seal is a single lip seal ...
So I have been dealing with a seal sale's rep ... He was tracking me down a double lip thats viton ... He even found me a seal that has a helex that is designed to push the oil away from the seal area .

So will see what he sends ... I was going to do the 2 seal deal ... 2 vitons will not fit ... where the seal press's into the aluminum pump housing ... that is a cone shape design ... so once you press the first seal in the the next seal would have to be glued in place because it's not a tight fit .

Hope know one has my pump problem .

Anytime there is a problum with the area that the seal rides on [ grove , rust ] get whats called a seal saver , its a metal colar that slides tight over the area that the seal rides on to give it a new surface, remeber that once you have it in place to take the right angle off , if you look inside before you put it on that theres a grove on the inside that helps to peal it off , that lip is for driving the saver on with a pipe , but do not scratch the seal surface.

Smile Re: pump seal

I'm very fast at it now ...I can have the vacume pump out in 15mins ...LOL .
The process is the same if you just removing the vacume pump or the powersteering pump ... unless you take out you wheel well .

1) remove your battery and washer bottle
2) remove your vacume boster line hose and clamp
3) unbolt the band on the vacume pump ...it hold your starter and ground cable in place .
4) You need to crawl under the truck and remove the stationary bracket that joins the vacume pump to the engine ..it's a 10mm the other is 15mm and while your under there you can get the other upper 15mm bolt off the pump.
5) you will need a deep 15mm socket for one of the 2 remaining bolts ... just loosen them .
6) you will need a 7/16 and a 9/16 wench ... you need to remove the oil line that feeds the vacume pump ... make sure to put a little bag or rubber glove over the line , you don't want any dirt geting in there .
6 1/2) ...LOL forgot you need to remove the wire that has a weather pack connector thats right behind the power steering pump .... sorry about that a last min addition.
7) remove the two 15mm bolts that hold the vacume pump to the motor , once removed you will have to hold and rotate the two units down and out of the way of the injection pump ... you will see if you just try and move the power steering pump back it's impossible.
8) once the units are down and away just undo the two remaining 15mm nuts joining the two .

It's pretty easy , I will say the tools do make the mechcanic ... my trusty snap-on swivel head rachet is a life saver .
If you do a seach there are a few guys that posted how to disasemble the vacume pump ...if you have a groove in you steering pump , make sure you do not position your seal in the same spot as the groove.

Thanks, I looked at the thing and the bolts on the back are in there pretty tight and there didnt appear to be much room to swing a ratchet. so your saying disconect the vp from the bracket that mounts it to the timing case first, then remove the 2 big bolts that are attached to the timing case?

There is a support bracket on the bcak side of the units where the vacume pump and power steering pump join together ... remove that first and the other 15mm thats above ...you can try and just take the two pump bolts and then un bolt every thing later .
But you get not leverage ... thats just the was that worked for me .
