06+ guys would want the starscan tool(factory Chrysler tool)
but since most guys cant afford it I would get this if you have a laptop....

I love mine....you have to buy the expansion software if you want to read everything!!! but it's worth it IMHO

It's worked pretty good for me. I get a strange reading for "Calculated Load" when racing at the track, but other than that it's been fine.
How in-depth does the expansion software go? Does it allow you to change the update rate? Mine is updating every 2 seconds but I would prefer 1 second intervals at the track. Does it let you perform diagnostic tests on injectors and stuff?

Just curious Mark...which package did you purchase? I've been trying to find a "moderate" priced scan tool for playing around with at home, or just to have handy in my tool box so I don't have to hunt down one of the DRB's. I'm finding that the "tool truck" scanners you pretty much have to spend $1K+ for decent readings of sensors or to differentiate between the ECM and PCM on the VP trucks. Been looking at getting a palm treo anyways so the scan tool/pda feature looks interesting.

you can NOT do injector tests with this tool I wish you could but you cant think the factory tool is the only one that can..maybe some cummins tools???

with my 06 witch is a CAN truck I can read quit a bit of stuff...like rail psi with just the basic scanner
but to read ANY other HPCR sensors I need to run the expansion stuff.
the older Diesels are weird they did not make them all go to OBDII so some stuff you need to have the expansion software to read
so if you had a 01 with a VP44 I bet you would need the expansion software to read the faults..but even if you bought the ex-soft it would be way better and cheaper then most other scanners that could do the same stuff.
does that make sense

Rail psi can be handy on a common rail......but only if you can also monitor the "setpoint" directed by the ECM. If you can't see that the rail number is just that.....a number. Can you monitor the set point?

I haven't seen anything about a "setpoint" in the software. The reading is in PSI and seems to jive with everyone else's numbers. I guess even if it's not an accurate number, it's still very useful to see if you're draining the rail at all.

Setpoint or target psi is what the ECM wants for rail psi. With the DRB you are able to monitor what the ECM wants and then are able to see that the "mechanical" side of the fuel system is able to deliver by watching the "fuel rail psi". Driving along simply monitoring rail psi would be nothing more than "eye candy" with out it. Crusing you might be around 10k psi, but when you throw it to the floor your "setpoint" can go as high as 25K psi and your rail psi should follow that reading quite quickly. Acceleration overshoot, lack of power due to fuel rail psi can be seen using these two readings. Setpoint will always vary due to rate of accel, load, etc....
