Saw a really sick thing today at ....
.......the Dodge dealer's garage. A 2003 was getting a new head. :'( :'(
It would seem maybe Chev and Ford are not the only ones having some injector problems. This engine started some knocking. A tear down showed two burned valves - - the culprit was injectors. They replaced the whole head rather than repair it. The nice part was, what a beautiful piece of work that new head is. Wow, I was impressed while I was still fighting the urge to loose my lunch. I was told there have a been a couple other instances of it, but nothing like the other two are experiencing. Those others were not in this shop.
Still no headway on the shuddering, but they are going to try the carriage assembly shim next week. They cannot find the low rpm vibration at about 1100 - 1300 when just puttsing along, not accellerating. We will have to continue trying to track that one down, or maybe something will show up with another truck that is applicable to my problem.

I did not see the speedo (battery disconnected anyway) but the mechanic did mention that it did not have a lot of miles on it. Truck looked good, not ragged or anything. It was sad to see such a new pretty engine torn down that far. The price on these new injectors is outrageous. Glad they have a 100,000 mile guarantee. Guess we better sell at 99,999.

Thanks Fiverbob.
Guess it could be bad injectors from the start or trash getting into the injector from assembly.
Maybe all the more reason to change fuel filters often and use diesel fuel additives at every fillup.

since we are talking about heads and injectors in this thread. something new started with my truck tonight. i was driving home from about 40 miles away from the house. it was 46 degrees out there tonight. after i started the truck and let it run for a few minutes i started on my way home about 4 blocks after i started driving i decided nothing good was on the radio tonight. so it was dead quiet in my truck...untill i heard noises that sound like tapping coming from the front of the truck....i did a test for you guys to maybe give you and idea of how loud this was....i put the fan speed on level 1 = still heard it.... level 2 = heard it....level 3 = did not hear the tapping.....the tapping i heard was louder and faster as i was accelerationg, and right before the truck shifted (48re) it seemed to get louder. mabye i didnt notice this or maybe it never happen before...maybe because it is 45 degrees out? then when i was just about home i noticed there was no more noise...... what is this? i think it sounded like injectors. are they supposed to make noise like this? please help i dont know why they did this......P.S. if this was a very stupid thing to even post, i am sorry i am a newbie here and i am a newbie to diesels (this is my first) thank you

I think you are hearing a cold engine. They sound entirely different when it is colder out until they warm up. Mine sounds more like a new Ford - more diesel sound. Mine goes away once the temp gauge gets up a few degrees. The guys from the cold country can probably verify this much more than I can. At 45 degrees, we head for the covers.

I agree, when cold the engine has a completely different sound, especially when accelerating. I always turn the CD up when starting.

Yea, they can make a good bit of racket when it's cold. Wait till it's really cold, like 10 degrees cold. Then you'll hear some different sounds.
As long as it goes away with water temp coming up, I'd say it's normal.

I live in Canada and have 3 week old 2500. Our overnight lows have started dropping to -7C (+19F). I have noticed that the "wait to start" light will stay on for about 15 - 20 secs now and the engine "clatters" a bit while idling (but not too loud). I let the engine idle for a minute, then idle it up my lane (one block) or drive at a low speed, keeping the engine speed below 1,200 rpm). When I get to the end of the street, I have to give it more fuel to get into traffic and I hear the "clattering" I think you are talking about. One more city block with my foot light on the accelerator pedal and the clatter doesn't appear as loud as I am not too heavy on the pedal. As the engine warms up, the clatter disappears.
I have used this noise to judge how hard to drive the truck first thing in the morning. I figure if I hear a loud clatter, I am probably not letting the engine warm up enough before working it. I adjust my driving to reduce the noise.
Last winter I test drove a Ram when it was -10F. I drove it for about 20 minutes (from dead cold - no plug in) and didn't notice the clatter under a light pedal during warmup. Cruising on the highway at 60 mp/h I could hear the clatter. I don't recall if the engine was at normal operating temperature, but I made a mental note to myself to think about a winter front for those really cold days.

The Pilot injection cuts out at low RPM's and cold weather I am told and can hear every morning the clacking......
