?'s on turbo change

Just a few ?'s, Might get to changing out manifold and turbo this weekend, what i need to know is

What kind of exhaust gasket do i need, the manifold did not come with one?

Is there anything special i need to know when changing out the turbo?

And any special way I need to start it or is there a "break in" time or anything for the turbo or manifold? Thanks for any info....

Pretty straightforward process.

Here is a basic order;

1) Disconnect compressor inlet and remove airbox.

2) Disconnect oil inlet.

3) Disconnect compressor outlet.

4) Disconnect downpipe. (squirt the two bolts with penetrating lube and let it dwell awhile.)

5) Disconnect oil drain. (Sometimes easier from the bottom after downpipe is out of the way)

6) Disconnect turbo from flange.

7) Disconnect manifold from head.

Reverse process for reassembly.

It's a good idea to use the old turbo as a guide for the orientation of the compressor and turbine housings. I've never done just a stock replacement so this may not be an issue for you.

I have never done so, but you could probably get away with reusing the manifold gaskets. I believe they are $6 each at the dealer, maybe cheaper at Cummins.

If you run into any trouble post back here. Someone will be able to get you through it!

I recommend new manifold gaskets (6) and one for the manifold to turbo connection. It's cheap insurance against leaks in the future.

Also, may need to 'Clock" the turbo (align the compressed air outlet with the elbow/downpipe. So loosen the face bolts on the compressor housing till the housing rotates. Easier doing this on workbench than when mounted on manifold.

AND.. be careful not to loose the orange o-ring in the top of the elbow... it's needed to seal against compressed air leaks.

Good Luck!

Yep! RJ is right on all accounts. Most new turbos come with the manifold to turbo gasket.

If you are swapping in another Holset the compressor housing is secured by a big snap ring in lieu of several bolts.
