Rusted out bed!!!

Pulled up the brand new bedliner that was in my truck when I bought it 3 months ago!! Guess why it was put in there....the bed was rusted through from tailgate back four inches and about 3/4 the way across, you can see where somone tack welded a plate over the hole, the wheel wells are beat to a pulp*. I guess my options are cutting out bad section and welding a plate down, finding a wrecked bed cutting out a section and patching in to better match the contour, or buying a new bed (not an option) I really hate plastic bedliners , anybody want one brand new w/tailgate cover too!!! AGHHHHH at least I only paid $6,500 for the truck!! It's a farmtruck so I am really not that worried but it really irks my taters. any hints or tips let me know!!!

Thanks Tom

I think the best option is sectioning in a piece of another bed in, then have the whole bed sprayed with linex bed liner. I wished I was closer to you as I have two sets of aluminum running boards and would trade them both for your liner. Goodluck,,, Rick

So you bought the truck with the liner??????

I take it the last person put the liner in to HIDE the rust???

I've had a plastic liner in my truck since new.....I have some paint missing, but no rust, and no holes. Usually the liner will move enough to keep everything clean. but even still, I check it yearly. If it should start, I'm rolling in some herculiner, its cheap, and works good.

I can understand your anger, but I doubt the liner caused the rust.

Check with your local Utility bed dealer.
He might have a complete bed you could pick-up (no pun intended ) for cheap.

I have '02 and most of the paint in the bed is scrached off by the bedliner, I'm gonna complain to the dealer about it since its almost to the metal and only 2yrs old.

Has anybody else complained to dodge or to there dealer and gotten anything out of it??
I'm hopeing they repaint it and I'll get a spray-in.

I did the generic rollin bedliner in the cab of my old 3/4 ton Chevy, I loved it but it got really noisy and hot in the cab. But I really liked the stuff, I had been planning on doing it to the bed of the Cummin (still am), the truck had been an excavating company's truck which would explain some of why it's beat to snot, but I am in the excavating business and not one of our trucks is this bad. I know the bedline didn't cause it I just cant stand stuff sliding around the bed on the hard plastic!!! I may check with some of the local flatbed dealers soon to see if they have a stock truck bed, or I may leave it, I do have a flatbed in the barn for a first gen though.........hmmmm.........

That is an old trick when selling a truck. Pull the old bedliner and slap in a new one. Covers 5th hitch holes, rotten box, damage etc. The bedliners don't cause the rust. Road salt does.

You didnt crawl under the truck before you bought it? You might want to crawl under there and see what other suprises you might have.

I would get a flatbed. You can get a nice one for $800 around here. I am so glad I dont have to deal with roadsalt.

Check out some body parts companies on line. I have seen patch panels that match the bed (or at least they say they do). Patch the pieces in, bang out the fender wells and get a spray in bed liner. Or even a diy bedliner if all you want to do is cover the seams from patching. It will help stop the rust as well.

The flatbed is a great idea since it's a farm truck. Good luck, Kevin

Have you looked for a used bed?

If it's for the truck in your sig, then you're looking for an 8' bed.

From what I know, it wouldn't matter if it come from a 1/2 ton or a 3/4 ton 94- at least 98.

The going price for one around my are is about $500-$600. rust free and in good shape.
