RPM's at Idle???
Hello,
As some of you may know, I just bought a 1997 12V about a week and 1/2 ago. When I purchased the truck it idled at about 500 RPM. I took the truck to the garage this past week to get the KPD Tab done, and have the valves adjusted along with a 50 pt safety inspection etc.
When I picked up the truck this weekend, they advised me that they adjusted the idle on the truck higher because they felt that if I was towing etc, with the idle so low, I could run into some stalling problems when first taking off etc.
Right now the truck Idles at about 1000 RMP in park, and about 700-900 in drive with my foot on the brake (no a/c running) so, more or less 1000 RPM with my foot off the break. Is that o.k.?? Will it do any harm to leave the idle set up how it is? It seems to be a bit high to me.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

It does give me a kick, and idles along without pressing the gas at a pretty good clip.
I really like the shop I went to, and I think they really did a good job and know what they are doing but, not certain as to why they would set it that high.
Has anyone heard of any problems with the trucks stalling out if the idle is set at around 500 RPM when the go to start out pulling a load?

So long as I am not causing any harm to the engine or anything else by it idling ath that RPM, I am fine leaving it. I am just afraid of causing any additonal strain, or premature wear (even though it has 184K miles) etc.
I really need to make this truck last, and plan on keeping it a long, long time.

probably what happened is the shop adjusted the idle up to around 800 but the truck was cold when they did it... so now when its warmed up it idles a little higher.
a cold truck will normally idle 100rpm's lower till it starts to warm up.
1000rpm idle is kind of nice in the winter time for cold starts and keeping the truck warm if you park it and leave it run for 10minutes while you run in a store etc... i personally have mine at 950, and will lower it back down to 800-850 in the summer

Beware- what happens most often is a groove gets worn in the adjustment screw, often just a quarter turn is all it takes to get back to normal.
