rough shifting trans causing rear axle pinion seal to leak?
i have a aftermarket trans that is shifting very hard, to the point that it slams into gear. unfortunately i cant get the trans looked at until august to try and adjust the shifts. now the problem is my rear axle was rebuilt last summer and now the pinion seal is leaking bad. i want to make sure that the rough shifting trans is not causing the seal to leak so the drive train shop cant give me any reason not to warranty it.

If the pinion bearings are preloaded correctly, there is no way that a rough shift could cause the pinion shaft to move in/out or up/down, or any other improper movement that could harm the seal. Your leak won't be related at all to the transmission.

thanks Torque, i was thinking the same but want to make sure they replace the seal under warranty. my trans shifts real hard, to the point you can hear the drive line slam around if you dont let off when it shifts.

Yes, the transmission shifting hard will cause the pinion seal to leak, been there done that.
Bad ujoints will cause the same thing to happen, been there done that.
If you want to see why mount a camera under there to watch the drive shaft, hanger bearing and pinion when you hit the throttle, on hard shifts and high TQ. Scare you straight for sure.
Some time you get lucky and it will quit leaking when you fix the problem, otherwise it will need replaced.
