Rough idle, black smoke, dirty oil... Do I need tips, or more?

My 03 has 255k on it and its had the rough idle on and off for a couple months, fuel filters are changed every 10k, and my milage had not really suffered.

It does smoke grey a bit. Enough to barely see it roll by the truck at a stop.

Now, here is the deal maker. At my last amsoil oil change, the oil looked good at 20k on it. Now 3k after that the new oil is black!

So I think I need to get a new injector set???

Maybe it's something else?

I also just installed a Wilson manifolds thrasher, could it be a loose injector line? No leaks there...

Does this mean I need just tips? Or the whole injector set? Is It worth replacing just the bad ones? Or should i just do them all?

Thanks in advance.

Got a 05 and the only time it isn't black is immediately after an oil change before O start it. start it for a minute and check the oil and its black like 15000 miles.

Yes, but my oil is not usually dirty until 20,000 so something is different. My real issue is the injector problem can anyone chime in here?

If you have the money and you find that you have a bad injector (which is what I believe is your issue) then you should change them all at once. With that much road time you are going to be due for new ones in less than 100k miles anyhow.

Are we talking just tips? Or whole units?

With that many miles I would do the whole things.

As an alternative, you could find a shop that could test all 6 & let you know what their opinion is. But with that many miles, I personally would change all out for new balanced set.

Cool,

Can anyone explain what is actually wrong with the injector? Can I just send mine out to get cleaned and put new tips on them?

I put some power services diesel kleen in the tank and the rough idle went away, still smokes the same tho.

if the body or tip was cracked you would be making oil. most common failures are in electrical solenoids (not firing correctly), pitted out ball seats (causing too much fuel to be returned), or carboned up tips interferring with spray pattern. Don at F1 diesel is the best place to send them for full bench testing and repairs of injectors.

Cool.

Well, I have driven another 400 miles with a decent amount of diesel kleen in there and the rough idle is gone. Oil level is the same from what I can see.

Maybe it was something internal? Still seems to smoke a little at idle...

A lot less rattle from the motor. Almost as much as running 2 stoke oil in the fuel vs. plain diesel.

Any ideas?
