Rough dissengaging cruise control.

Please bring in your experimenting with your cruise control.Mine while working good at about every level seems to offers what I would call a "rough dissengaging phase". Lets say ,while cruising flat highway situations,if I would call for rather reducing speed or plainly getting out of cruise there was a fair amount of clunking noise accompaigning this ..nothing smooth there for sure. Now I must precise this is a 1994 5 speed manual transm. truck. The jerking was strong enough to make me feel like not sing it.If I woul demand for accelerating then everythig was OK and smooth.

While I understand there is a phenomenon of compression braking taking place I still don't think my clunking as normal..if so there is a bad design here.At only 63K miles I believe everything on the drivetrain to be thight..no play on the drive shafts to be felt and the truck feels rock solid .

When I would down shift manually ,from habit,I would play the throttle and then everything is smooth as butter..could it be the fuel delivery getting returned to zero too rapidly with a defective cruise and this would explain this?

thanks,Ron.

The cruise control has no components that can clunk. Even though you say you checked the u-joints that sure sounds like the problem. The problem is definitely in your drivetrain or loose mounts

Mine dissengauges roughly as well. I try to have my foot on the gas and kind of meet the cruise so it doesn't let off so hard

Probably u-joints as Infidel said. Even though I could feel no slop in my joints I replaced the amm recently and it made a world of difference. Could also be your rear pinion has some slop and needs set up.

Make sure that you check for u-joint play in Neutral (with the truck secured from rolling!)

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a thread about putting something in the cruise control vacuum line to make it engage and disengage smoother.

My cruise works fine but is a little abrupt when it disengages.

I think I remember the post having something to do with softening the way the cruise comes on and off.

Anyone remember this thread?

I always thought mine was rough on turning off due to the rear end having some play in it. I just match the speed with a little skinny pedal before turning off the cruise, makes it silky smooth then.

Nothing wrong with your truck!

Just match the speed then let off smoothly...

As others have said...

Not a U-joint, or rear or something broken...

Its gear slop in 5th... nothing to worry about.
