Rotella T ?
I don't know if anybody has posted anything about this because I have not been on this site in while. Will the new formula Rotella T be enough protection for our older engines or will we have to add something ? Thanks for any insight on this.

The jury is still out of the performance of the new CJ-4 oils. Although they do have some advances in soot control, I am leery of any formulation change made for the sole purpose of emissions, which is what CJ-4 is all about. If you have a flat tappet gas engine such as the ever popular small block Chevy you probably know that the new gas engine oils do not have enough EP/AW additives to protect the cams.
I've had problems with the performance gas engines and race engines have to be run on "racing" oil or use specially blended oil to help them live. At work we have quite a few ISC engines, which is also a flat tappet cam like the B's. We have many cam failures with these engines running the older CI-4+ oils which have more ZDDP for EP/AW protection. After working with Cummins, we have been running a redesigned cam for a number of years, but are failure rate is still too high. I'll admit that part of our problem is the high idle time, but the biggest problem is flat tappet cams require a very good oil.
All my long rambling means that I'm going to continue to run CI-4 until CJ-4 proves itself in older engines. I'm sure that CJ-4 will work out, but I'm not going to take the oil companies word that it'll work as advertised (I've been down that road before - fool me once....) and trust my expensive diesel engines to their statements. I don't want to scare anyone, but I'd like some field proof, then I'll switch.

W900A I was wanting to run Rotella in my race motor because of the zinc & phosphorus content until I seen they changed the formula. What would you use in a race motor & a diesel?

Are you wanting to run the same oil in both the race engine and in the diesel (I'm assuming you mean a gas race engine)? If that is the case you still have a couple of options. Most refineries are going to blend the current CI-4+ and the new CJ-4 oils, so just check the bottle to make sure you are running CI-4. Another option would be to run a race oil in the gas engine such as Valvoline VR1 (I think that's what they call it) or one of the Royal Purple race oils. Schaeffer's also makes some great oils. You could use their 7000 oil which is a 15w40 or the 9000 which is 5w40.
I'm not a big fan of oil treatments and I recommend against them. However, Valvoline Syn Power Oil Treatment has a lot of ZDDP and moly in it which would really help out an emissions compliant oil. Shaeffer's also has a similar additive. I would caution against the Slick 50/Lucas/Stop-Smoke type additives.
I'm currently running Castrol Hyperon 5w40 in my two 454 small blocks. The oil is a bit expensive, but the GPIII base oil holds up well to tract conditions. I'll probably run the same oil in the 540 when it's done.

I stocked up on the CI and SL grades in my preferred brands for the older engines over the summer after I learned what they were doing to the oil. When that runs out I won't use the new stuff in the old engines without an add like Synpower, VSOT, STP or something to increase the amount of ZDDP and phosphorous. The manufacturers and oil companies are not interested in helping us run old motors, in fact quite the contrary. The sooner our engines blow the sooner we'll be in the market for new iron. I'm not really a conspiracy theorist and of course this is all driven by the Federal government, but that is the unfortunate market reality.

For our 5.9 CI is a better oil. Won't be long before you can't find it, or will have to pay for a "botique" brand that will still make CI. I bet all the Bigger companies will only make CJ.

I was at Wal Mart a few months ago, and they already had all the CI4 oils gone, replaced by CJ4. I ran it anyway, seeing as I had no real alternative option. Oil analysis at the end of this change will determine my next course of action.

Yeah, keep us posted on the results (I assume Blackstone labs)???
I want to figure out what oil to use as I only have 300 miles on my rig so far...
Cheers!

You wont have to worry, your in a totally different ballgame than those of us with Trucks that are 15 years old or so. Figuring out oil is like figuring out what Soda to buy, its all personal opinion. Pick one and stick with it.

Only problem is the new diet oil WILL kill our flat tappet cams an order of magnitude faster than the full flavor stuff. Come to think of it, I can't recall ever losing weight ordering a big mac and diet soda either, so maybe you're right.

My '06 seems to love this new CJ-4 Rotella T. And its make-up looks simular to the older Rotella T. I did a VOA of this oil that I put in my truck, here is a link to it at BITOG.
