Thanks. How often do you change oil? I'm thinking of every 5000 miles.

Been running it in both my trucks for about 5 years. 15,000 miles between changes.
At 7500 miles, if I'm not mad at my truck, LOL, I change the oil filter just for piece of mind.

Question.... If you run synthetic and do not change the oil every time the "oil Change" light comes on, will you void the warranty?

I'm a firm believer in synthetic oil and extending the oil change intervals, but I have to wonder if the "oil change" light is recorded with the mileage on the ecm. If you have an engine failure and the dealer wants to see proof that the oil changes were done when the light comes on......

Now if you sample the oil every time you change it.....

dealer wants proof, just take him home and show him the oil mess in your driveway. And beside how hard is it to clear the oil change light when it comes on. key on pump throttle 3 times key off. It would be up to you to keep track of the miles and when service is due.

I use Rotella 5-40 synthetic and change the oil every 7500. Slightly better MPG and alot quieter cold starts. $19.99/gal at autozone.

so i see 5w-40 and 15w-40 synthetic rotella oil. which one is better or is it just for your region. It runs around 100 degrees during the day in new mexico and I run my 6.7 like i stole it.

In your area I would use 15W40 no question.. The new synthetic blend of the 15W oils have a pour point near 0°F anyway so for your ambient temps it would be what I run.. I use it up here in the summer too.

Actually, I'm running Unocal Guardol ECT 15W40... a synthetic blend CJ4 oil that has a pour of -44F. I run it year 'round here in Edmonton, Alberta where it was close to -40 on a few nights this past winter. Not once did I ever have even a hint of a problem in getting started in the mornings. For your climate, I'd definitely go with the 15W40. 5W40 is for colder climates only. A full synthetic 5W40 has a pour point of near -60F, which would be of no benefit since you most likely never get below 32F there.

I just switched from Regular Rotella 15W40 to Synthetic 5W-40@22000miles. I was changing the oil at 5000 mile and decided to make the switch to 7500. I am putting roughly 5000 miles on it every 3 months. I dont haul heavy loads, maybe 5k lbs combined trailer weight and the race car on the weekends. I made the switch to try and make sure my Truck Last as long at possible. Is there any downfall to using the 5W-40 over the 15W-40 synthetic in hot climates?
