Right Track?

After much reading on this site debating the air box/not the air box...I removed my K&N and reinstalled my stock air box/filter. (Mostly due to I am reading here the K&N is not the greatest at filtering...true/false (I work in the extra dusty mining industry). Sure miss that whisle!!!!(considering switching back??) I have been trying to decide where to best put my money at this point. I only what alittle more power/mileage...as per the recommendation from DTR...a smarty Jr, gauges is what I need. Will my stock 3.5 exhaust with a Aero-Turbine Resonatoed muffler work ok? Didn't want to buy an exhaust system/different air box if for my hp range it was not really needed. I do not plan on exceeding the 400-425 hp range. Also..will 315 tire fit under a stock 2500 4X4 with org. steelies?

I moved it.

I would not run K&N. When I first bought my truck, the service manager told me to stay away from them... it lets particles through.

If you search for *****'s whistler, that's a pretty good DIY air mod. Or, you can do like I did, and get a drop in replacement filter (mine is an air raid) and cut holes in the bottom of your air box. I also have a new air tube...

The exhaust is fine... the stock exhaust does fine under 400 or so... if you have a straight through now, I'd leave it.

I have 35's on my truck with stock suspension, and they only rub a little at full lock.

Thanks, MadHat...this forum is great...thanks to all you who steadily input. I'm learning through it.

Ive seen the air raid drop ins...I'll pick one up and mod the box.
Leave the exhaust alone.
Pick up a Smarty Jr. and Isspro Ev's....

Filtration?? While I know it is very important...It has been recommended to pick up something like a AirDog...how do I know which pressure to get?
I'm reading here installations is pretty complicated...do you know an alternate filtration that is not so complicated?? and costly??

Some people just drill a bunch of holes in the bottom of the box, I went and got a 4 inch PVC elbow from Lowes and a coupler and pointed it toward the front of the truck... I've seen others use dryer vent hose to run it lower.

You can go with an AD 100, you can plumb that into your existing lines without a drawstraw, if I remember correctly. You can then either run it straight to the CP3, or tie it into the fuel canister.

If you just want a little better filtration, I think that there is a 2 mic that is a drop in on the stock fuel filter canister... I think that genos had them. I never got one from them, so don't quote me on that.

What gauges are you planning to get? I run FP, RP, boost, egt, and tranny temp.

If you are in a very dusty environment I would be very careful what I did to the intake system. Fine dust or silt can get past many of the filter options out there and damage your engine.

Think of it like this... In order to get more airflow in you pretty much have to sacrifice filtering... Most people that drive all hwy miles can get away with this but a guy like you NEEDS really good filtering of the intake system.

What I would suggest is going with a AFE Proguard 7 layer filter, it filters better than most at a slight reduction in airflow. You can get one in a drop in style for the stock box or you can get a complete cold air box style to suit your needs.

What ever you end up with, be sure to follow the instructions carefully when cleaning and oiling that type of filter and check your intake tube often for dirt and dust.

You are also a prime candidate for regular oil analysis, it can tell you quickly if dirt is getting past your filter as well Guys like you that work in extra dirty dusty conditions need to take precautions most of the rest of us are not subject to.

Good luck

Actually, that's only on 04.5 on up. His is an 04 so he has 3 1/2'' from the turbo to the muffler....then it exits 4'', if stock.

Another filter option for you is a BHAF set-up. I got one on mine, I like that it is a paper filter, but the thing is almost the size of a 5 gallon bucket. I got the numbers somewhere around here, I think I remeber the guy at the autoparts store cross referencing it to something like a cat dozer / extreme condition filter or something.. I got it at o-riellys and the silly thing even comes with a 2 year warrenty (warrenty for what I don't know)...

Great info guys....so..
I just came in from the garage....I have drilled holes in my factory air box and cut a hole in the front of it, used my K&N tube...alittle modifications and working great with factory box...currently has a Hasting(spelling?) dry filter. After reading the post that came in today....have I messed up? or will a drop in AFE Proguard 7 layer filter/Hasting dry filter be suffecient? Under my work conditions... I check everything pretty close at least every 5-7 days or less. If I need a factory style box...I can go replace the factory box???? I just hate to spend $3-500 on a box and exhaust if I really don't need it.

As far as the AD100, Ive read alittle about these...what pressure does this produce...this is getting past my knowledge....I really wasn't planning on a fuel pressure gauge....what pressures are normal?? As far as rail pressure...that alittle over my head...haven't research that yet..."newatitdiesel"...do I need a rail pressure gauge at my level of dieselness...new word??

Do most guage kits come complete, all necessary to install and make work? FP, RP, boost, egt, and tranny temp. Where does the egt sensor need to be placed?, I'm reading different places?? and different tempatures??

Rail Pressure...where does that sensor go?? what are normal pressures?

As far as the recommended Smarty Jr....I'm reading about downloading this and that..Revo?? Is this complicated for a "newatitdiesel"??? I work with computers daily, but how do know what I need for my truck...is this stuff preloaded??..can't express thanks enough???
