right size tires?

right size tires?

I'm still running the factory size tires on my 2500. Michelin 265/75/R16's. I am wanting to get some tires that are bigger in diameter to add an inch or two of ground clearance. Only problem is that I don't necessarily want really wide tires.

I've got about 3" of lift in the front so I don't think I'll have any problems with rubbing or anything. I'm also still running the factory 16" rims.

I don't do any off-roading so I don't need any tires with really big tread either. I'm basically just wanting some larger tires to raise the truck a little more.

Anybody have any good suggestions for the right tires.

I'm running TOYO M55 - 255 85 16s. They're 2 inches taller that stock and still narrow enough to run on the dually with a 2" spacer. They're a hard tire but I love the tread life and the snow/mud handling. They're hard to run on icy roads though. They provide a good $/mile return on investment though.

thanks. that's a pretty good looking tire. i will check into these.

Keep in mind....as you add diameter of 1" you also add circumference or rollout. This changes final drive ratios which change other things. Fuel economy will DECREASE because the the engine works harder to move the weight with a higher gear. If you do alot of town driving you will really notice. The speedometer is now off as well. I have the 285 michelins on mine now and if they ever wear out in going bank to 265,s. I dont care what anyone says, Its not all its cracked up to be. Do the math yourself. Ive owned more than one of these trucks and worked on hundreds of them. If you change the tire size by much you need to change the gear set. Just my 02 cents.

Lt.B, going from a 31" (nominal) tall tire to a 33" tire is not that big of a change. When I went from 265-75/R16s (31") to 255-85/R16s (33") I gained about 1.5 mpg with my 3.54 gears.

While you're correct about the speedometer being off, again it isn't that big of a difference and is easy to keep in mind. It's also easily corrected via the dealer or someone with a Smarty programmer.

I had my speedo corrected at the dealer when i went to 285's from 265's. I have 4.10 gears and my mileage didn't drop I have checked numerous times, when I got the truck it had 265's and I would get 18.5mpg(imperial) and after switching to 285's and having speedo corrected I still get 18.5 mpg

If I have 3.55 gears and I changed my tires from stock 265/75/16 michelin's & went to a toyo that was just a little over 33" tall (toyo m-55 285/75/16) would this have any negative effects on the truck with these gears? Also, is it fairly easy to get the speedometer re-calibrated?

how's the road noise on the toyo m-55's? I was just wondering how much noiser they are than stock tires or A/T tires like a Michelin?

what you want is to upgrade to 2004 or newer Dodge Cummins with 17in forged aluminum rims.

saves 30+ lbs per wheel... stock size is 265x70r-17
according to GPS speedo is dead on with 17in, for my 96 12 4x4 5sp

currently running 275x64r-20 ... speedo is 8% off with 20's

Even with 17" rims though aren't the tires going to be the same diameter?

I was just wanting to upgrade to a tire that was about an 1" or 1.5" higher to add some ground clearance....I'm just trying to avoid tires that are real wide cause i don't care to much how really wide tires look on these trucks. I would like to keep the 16" factory rims that i have. They are the aluminum ones & i like how they look.

If you get the 17" rims you can do the Big Brake Upgrade which is cheap and awesome.... You can find Hummer wheels (some with good rubber on them) for $200-300 per set. The brakes (calipers, rotors, pads) cost the same or are cheaper than the 16" ones and they last much longer.... JM2C.... As far as the size goes, I liked 285/75R16s when I had my stock rims. Looked good on the truck and performed well (not as good as the 315/70R17s, though)....

I also use the M55 285/75/16 tires. The 255/85/16 is also a size I would consider, although with the camper on the truck, I prefer the 285 size. With no off roading, a highway tread should be a better ride, better mpg, and less noise.
