Hello everyone.
Will the dealer perform this Recall (TSB?) even if the truck is out of warranty, and I specifically ask them not to do it? I'd like to get the idle-up feature enabled, but I'm worried they'll perform the Recall (TSB?) too...... Or should I just cough up the dough for a Smarty and do it myself??

Depends on the dealer. I told my service writer not to perform the E17 recall which he wrote in big letters on the work order. It was not done.

Others have said the dealer stated that they were required by law to perform the recall.

Whats this recall?? Is it to enable the honk or what?

From what I understand, the recall was in response to the auto trucks trans. going(slipping from vibration?) into reverse from park position idling and left unattended, causing unintentional and potentially dagerous movement of the truck. The recall,instead of fixing the mechanical or physical problem, sounds the horn when truck is in reverse and the door is open, alerting the driver that the truck is not in park. Please clarify people, if I'm misunderstanding this. I do know a person who had this recall repair performed, and finds it a royal pain.

It wasn't required by my dealer, they just made a note that theu told me about it. Basically, if you try to back up with the door open, like I do a lot when backing up to a trailer, the horn will start honking like it does when the alarm goes off. They told me what it was and I said "thanks but no"

I guess I'm the "odd man out" here. About the only thing we tow is our 34 ft. 5er. I frequently leave the motor running after I've backed into the hitch pin. I [U]want[U]to know if I haven't gotten it fully into park before I get out of the truck. If I were towing another type of trailer my opinion may be different. I can see where it would be an incovenience but, short of a legitimate mechanincal fix, I'll deal with it.

I'm not sure if the recall affects rebuilt trannys or not. Since mine is rebuilt,it may already have a proper fix? Anyway, a horn honk is no substitute for a mechanical safety hazard. It should be fixed,period. The horn blasting while backing slowly with the door open during a controlled manouver is rediculous!

Your also correct but now when it slips into reverse the driver can run back to the truck and get run over by his own truck trying to get inside to stop the truck.

Makes me scared to think it should even be left idling while out side of the truck....the horn will sound as it runs over you....that's a fix alright,getting annoyed before I die!

If anything will make me mad enough to sell my '03 it's the reverse honk. (came with the truck)

That is no lie! They should have fixed the problem. Also, your door would have to be open for the horn to honk, so if it slipped into gear the door would have to be open or it to sound. Another thing, you're gonna know if your truck goes into reverse and if your not standing right next to it, you're probably not goning to catch the truck anyhow. This is the STUPIDEST TSB ever!!

I've got an 06 with the reverse honk enabled & it really !@## me off when I am backing up to hook up to my trailer. I usually have the door ajar & having the horn go off all the time is embarrasing-especially in my neighborhood late at night.

anyways, I want this thing disabled......will the dealer do this-or are they going to give me some story about it being for safety.....

My '04 manual trans with the Hemi didn't have this (obviously) so I didn't think twice when stepping up to my '06 diesel with the auto. If women base their vehicle purchases on cup holders, I most certianly would have thought twice about buying the dodge over this stupid reverse-honk feature.
