Resources and shop manuals
I thought this might be a good Idea for a thread. Could be a repeat, if so, I'm sorry. You guys more than went out of your way to repeat the fuel filter info for me and that was mighty kind of you.
I want to do the KDP soon and am looking for a manual better than Chilton and Haynes. What's available to me?
Also, if you know of any good online shopping places throw them out there for me too?
My local stores don't have the fuel prefilter repair kit, for example, and I'm trying out the dealer, but they might be more expensive, eh?
Thanks,
Fish

There are no "formal" KDP instructions due to Cummins and Dodge both denying that it is a problem to start with. So you have to go looking on sites like this for write-ups by guys who have BTDT. There are many threads related to the KDP and methods of taking care of the problem.
For general motor info for the CTD the Dodge service manual is much better than Chilton and Haynes. And the dealers are not generally very helpful with CTD parts, either. If you can find a local big truck dealer that handles Cummins parts you will be surprised at the cost difference vs. the dealer for anything related to the CTD. For body/interior parts you have to go to dealer but motor stuff can be found elsewhere.

Oregon, try GenosGarage.com
Great people, good prices, they seem to take as much pride in serving you as you take in your truck.
I just bought a 97 FSM new for 85 bucks. They also have CD based versions. Pre-filter was cheap, either 6.95 or 8.95.
And you dont have to know part numbers, they can hook you up.

Here's where to get the best manual https://techauthority.gltghosting.co...atalogId=10051
Cummins does have a service bulletin on tabbing the KDP and fixing it's damage. Not available online though. They also sell the tab washer.

the TST website sells a KDP kit that comes with very good instructions, or you can download just the instructions from them as well.
I got my factory service manual for the truck from Geno's and then ordered the engine service manuals online from Cummins.
yeah, and for the most part, forget getting any help from the dealers. I have found only one dealer ever that could actually deal with getting me cummins parts correctly. And when I was dealing with the oil cooler, the dealer wanted $412 and Cummins only wanted $260 or so for the same part. If you can find a Cummins dealer near you that would be the way to go.
As far as mileage goes, it wouldn't hurt to adjust your valves. And if you drive with a lead foot or try to cruise at 80, mileage will suffer dramatically, at least that's what I've found in my truck. 65 is a good speed for mileage in my truck. Also I would think that the oversize tires aren't helping, either.

Genos Garage is the cheapest place I have found for the owners manual. As for parts, the Cummins dealers on Swan Island and they're super helpful down there. If you want the TST directions I have them in my garage and will send them or drop them someplace in PDX if you want me too (I'm from PDX too). I'll be home for the rest of the month on Sunday.
I did my KDP a couple of months ago. The TST kit is pretty good, but I like real gaskets and went to the Cummins dealer for my timing cover gasket. Because of that, I think I could have put the parts together for less money.
The kit consists of a tube of RTV, a front main seal, and the KDP washer, which would be easy to make.
Any questions feel free to PM me, and we can talk diesels.
