Replacement for OEM muffler and tailpipe

So my muffler and tailpipe on my 06 are rusting pretty good with holes in both. My mechanic said he could only get from Dodge and would be $630 installed and he said that price seemed pretty high. So I'm looking for suggestions on replacing the OEM with aftermarket. I'm OK with a little louder than stock but also don't want highway drone, etc.

Any suggestions?

There's nothing special about the factory parts. Just go to any good independant muffler shop and use quality generic parts.

I replaced mine with a Silverline system 4" stainless steel from the turbo back. A little "throatier" on excelleration than the stock pipes but smooth at cruising speed. I am pleased with the Silverline setup and being stainless steel I hope it lasts as long as I have the truck.

I went wth Magnaflow fron the turbo back and it sounds great, I did not want more cabin noise and I have been impressed.

Hmmmm, It just so happens I had to pull the tail pipe out from under my 06' this morning before leaving for work. Happen to notice I didn't see it........and then upon looking at the muffler saw it was not connected. The muffler too looks like it is ready to go.

If I do a cat back replacement can I go dual? If I do a turbo back dual replacement (ANSA Silverline 4") do I need a tuner? Still running the stock turbo & intake.

Thanks for the help.

I decided to wait until "salt" season was over and getting closer. What model did you use?

Any other suggestions?

I went with the 4" Cat Back MBRP Cool Duals in 409 S.S.

The sound is pretty decent at WOT or any other time you accelerate at any speed, but while cruising they are quieter than stock! And I like that. I mean they are super quiet. I guess if I eliminated the cat I could hear them all the time. But I don't mind them like this. At much higher R's on the highway you can hear me cummins. Not radical by any means but I try to take it easy when I go by the neighbors house late at night. The have a low rumble even at 10mph on a slight incline.

Installation on the driveway was not too bad. The truck has 35's so it sits up high enough to lay on a creeper and work but not so high that your arms are fully extended the whole time. I used a Dewalt cordless saw-zall and just cut all the tips off of all the existing pipe hangers so I could slide them out of the rubber mounting brackets. I had to drop the spare to install one of the new hangers. I cut the pipe attached to the cat clear and still had to use a cold chisel to split it some to break it loose. This ate up the most time. I'm a big guy and no weakling but I had a hard time aligning everything by myself. If you have a buddy, grab a 12 pack and ask for some help. I mean it wasn't too bad but it could have been better. Still worth the 150.00 I saved in labor at the shop. 5 hours total including smoke/beer breaks and tweaking the tips. Of course this was my first time so.....

Before starting the truck I made sure to wire tie the drivers side brake line away form the exhaust, but made sure it was loose enough to allow for axle travel. I waited about 15 minutes and I could still put my hand on the pipe so I am not worried about it.

I bought the exhaust from a place called Cummins Performance Parts, in Pa. Ask for Jamie. A guy on this forum named Nick told me about him. I ordered them and they were at my house 3 days later. Incredible. And they will beat or match any price you can verify, even from a web link, which is way cool. They had the absolute best price anywhere on this set up. The only way to get them cheaper is to make them.

Jamie did tell me that some guys have experienced muffler crack in the 304/309 lines due to extreme expansion/contraction in the winter but with a lifetime warranty, promised a replacement if so.

I love the look of the duals behind the rear tires. 5" dia. t-304 tips come with the kit. I am still gonna add some mud flaps just to help keep em cleaner longer. But hey, it's a truck. I highly recommend this kit for an 06' 2500. I can't say for any other trucks. Oh, MPG's seem to drop right off the bat. Could be the ECM needs some time to adjust for the added airflow. Now though after two tanks of fuel I am back up to almost 18.5 mpg. I do notice it runs a little cooler too and on uphill grades it holds the gear instead of downshifting. Overall, I like em. I saved a lot of money over my original choice of Ansa Silverline and saved even more doing the work myself. If you live in the Norther Harford County, Md. area, PM me and maybe we can meet somewhere if you want to see/hear them. I don't mind.

You might consider a Nelson/Fleetproducts 86131m. This is a large 4", straight through muffler with no baffles. I had it installed cat-back on my '06 short bed. It is a little louder than stock and has no drone. The EGTs appear to be reduced, although I haven't towed with it yet. It was about $100.00 OTD from my friendly Cummins dealer. It is also available online from various vendors. Good luck-John
