Replace clutch NV5600 4x4
I am preparing to replace the clutch on my truck and have been reading the service manual.
Questions:
Do you really need to separate the transfer case from the transmission?
Are there any shortcuts or tips?
How about PIAs that can be avoided?
Thanks,
George

You don't have to separate the T case, but you better have one heck of a tranny jack to hold the load! The tranny alone weighs a good chunk. Pulling both together would be interesting to say the least! Other than that it is a straight foreward easy job.
As far as PIA'S, not sure what the heck your talkn about!
If it's PAIN IN THE you know what, sure any time you have to work on your "own" stuff it's a PAIN!
The last thing I want to do after a ten hour shift of wrenching on heavy equipment is come home and work on my stuff!

Thanks for the responses.
It sounds like I need to separate the case from the transmission.
Any surprises or insight learned after or during the job that would make it easier next time?
Thanks again

I have never done it on one of these, but if the shifter unbolts from the tranny, you might be able to leave it on the x-member, and just slide the tranny and t-case back, and replace the clutch. also if you rent or own a good tranny jack, there is no reason you couldn't leave the tow together. It also only takes about 30 min to drop the t-case. Pick your poison, and have fun.

put the truck up on blocks like 6 or r 8 inch blocks under the wheels, that way she stays stable and is up a little higher to crawl around under. of course E brake on.(Please do not use concrete blocks we want you around longer)
You need a floor jack for the lift and hold part and if your have done a few clutches the rest is straight fwd.
It is very helpfull to have a hand for the balancing act, as the T.C. likes to roll left or right and the trans needs to adj. a little as you go back in,,by that I mean if its centerd on the jack you no doubt will have to tilt the nose up or dwn to get all back in .
Befor you start take out the rubber boot and shifter(just on bolts).
The flywheel is pretty hvy in that position,do'nt let it get away from you, and I always use new bolts for it.

When I replaced my clutch, I did not separate the tranny from the transfer case. I have a heavy duty tranny jack, used it up front to support the trans and used a regular floor jack to support the back end under the transfer case. Dropping the tranny and transfer case was no big deal, but stabbing the input shaft back in was difficult. I ended up using two floor jacks to support the back end to minimize the twist in the unit - it still took me a while to get everything lined up to the point I could stab the tranny in. When I do it again, I will be separating the transfer case from the tranny!

I know how dependent it is on driving style, but just curious how many miles you got out of first clutch?
I will be putting in a TSTPM3, Dodgezilla HX40/35 and EDMIIs so I went ahead and got a SBC con ofe. I want to replace the clutch on my time table and not find myself by the side of the road. Been there and done that. I will probably be doing everything in the next couple of weeks.
Thanks for the tips.
