Removing wood trim in '06 MEGA

I did it...couldn't stand the fake wood trim they put in these trucks. It's really easy, just remove the door trim, you can then see the "plastic spot welds" that hold the trim piece in. Just take a 23/64" drill bit and drill 'em out; the trim just pops off. The great thing is that from the factory there are mounting points for some trim screws already in place with holes in the door trim already, so that you can just remount them securely. I am having them painted to match my exterior along with the radio surround. Will post pics when completed, should be by this weekend! This is just an FYI to let all you '06 MEGA guys know that they are easily removed and replaced without permanent damage.

ENJOY!

I can't wait to see pics. That's EXACTLY what I want to do, but I'm a little worried how well the finish would hold up. Are you having them coated w/about 900 coats of clear after painting? How much is it going to cost you to have them done?

I have never understood the reasoning for the plastic wood.

Yep, I am doing the trim around the radio as well. I am having a quote performed tomorrow. I'll let you know the results. I did trim my radio bezel a bit to get my Kenwood/Garmin touch screen navigation syatem to fit correctly, so I figure the paint will make that look even better. It shouldn't need too much clear those inserts don't get much wear n tear.

Just got my quote: $50 to paint the door panel inserts and the radio surround to match the exterior. No too shabby! Will be completed by tomorrow. I will post pics by this weekend of the procedure and the results.

Please post the pics when done! I want to do the same thing... How long did it take for you to get the door panels off?

5 minutes / per panel at most...just 2 screws in the front doors 1 on the back pair. 10mm socket to removed the handle and lift 'em off. It's as easy as that. Putting them back on take a little more coordination to get all the "hooks" to go back in to their mounting holes and make sure you remember to put the door lock back through the hole. It's a VERY simple procedure, this whole project should only take you 30 minutes-hour to remove them all and remount.

I look forward to seeing it as well! My truck goes in to have this done as well as the QuietCar applications when my suspension comes in! I too went with the exterior color as my choice.

I can't wait till you post pics!
