Removing shift pattern from shift ****?!

Well, I am going to attempt to remove the plastic peice with the shift pattern in it because my girlfriend went and gave me this: for Christmas. I am not sure if she liked it and thought it would look cool, or if she just wanted to challenge me to get it in there

Is there a trick to getting that little thing out of there? Or is it just as straight forward as a pair of small flat heads and start prying the hell out of it?

BTW, the surround looks purple around the rams head, but it is all black around the blue.

Thanks, I looked at it quick tonight but it seems like any way I get it out of there with a screwdriver is going to leave the rest of the rubber around the insert looking beat to death. I will try again when the warmer weather makes its way around here, see if that helps.

I am guessing that there are no other tips or pointers that would be of use?

Trying it when it is warmer will help. Try to use something that doesn't have sharp edges. I used my swiss army knife's screwdriver as it is rounded with no sharp edges. I pried the rubber back a bit and just slid the tool around the center disk. Putting it back was about the same but you have to pry the last little bit in.

If you don't mind destroying the shift pattern one, you can take a long screw and start screwing it in right in the middle (used a cordless screwdriver as well), and as it goes through the cap, it will hit the shifter rod and pop up the shifter cap. You can then push the new one in, or do what I did and replace it with a Hurst Universal T-Handle.
