Removing pitman arm/linkage
What kind of a puller do I need to pull off the pitman arm from the sector shaft. Can you rent this item at a Autopart store ?
Also, what is needed to separate the pitman arm from the steering linkage ? Can this be left on and still pull the pitman arm off the sector shaft or do both need to be removed.
Any help would be great
Thanks

I know most will let you rent the loaner tools, but there is no way in he$% the typical 2 or 3 arm pullers would have been able to get the stock pitman arm off my truck

Do you have to remove the linkage on the opposite end of the pitman arm ? or can I just wiggle off the pitman arm and swing it out of the way to get to the steering gear ?
Thanks for the responses everyone

I bought one made by K-D Industries (I think..it was a long time ago) and used it to pull mine when I did my lift kit. I needed to grind down the tabs so they would fit between the underside of the arm and the steering box housing. I'm guessing this clearance will be different from one truck to another because of tolerance variance ... but something to look at when purchasing a tool.
I like that cup-style from Snap On. Wonder what the price tag on that one is!?!?!?

It's all in how you use a tool (and then yes there is the .1% that really need the pricey tool) My cheap 12 dollar one pulled mine off fine. It is a fine art of where to hit, how hard to hit, and what to use. I had to use a bit of heat, then cool the center and a few downward wacks on the puller it popped right off. There are those that are just rusted on for 50 years that are problably better to cut off than pull

I changed my steering box last night. Got lucky and the pitman arm popped right off with my puller, not heating or beating was nessacery. Although I've done that in the past before on other vehicles.
Too bad my leak wasn't from the box though..... Spent 4 hours pulling lines trying to find the leak before giving up and going to bed. All the lines look good but the leak only occurs when the wheel is turned to full lock and the pressure spikes. Must be a pin hole somewhere.
