Reliable upgrade path

As I am nearing 36K, I am more seriously looking at my potential upgrades. Here is what I have in mind, kind of in order:

1)EGT gauge (already have boost)
2)Edge EZ
3)Piers Modified Turbo or G1 if I can get one
4)Don M EDM injectors in the ~70HP range
5)South Bend Clutch OFE or FE
6)5" exhaust and possibly larger turbo downpipe
7)Intake of some soft, possibly Scotty 3
8)Eventually B1 turbo or twins & maybe new Edge box

I would like your advice on order of upgrades, and any suggestions to modify this list. Also, please advise me on anything that I will needs to add/upgrade to keep reliablity and driveability up. These upgrades will be done one at a time, as budget allows. This truck has to remain reliable and I don't really want mileage to suffer.

Thanks,
Nick

The 5" exhaust is going to hurt your performance somewhat, until you get to the 500+HP range with twins. Consider an interim step here - keep the current exhaust, but slice out the stock muffler and replace it with a free-flowing unit.

Strongly consider a fuel pressure gauge... others have been able to pull a vacuum on the fuel system with just the addition of an EZ. Once you have the injectors and the EZ, think about a replacement for the stock lift pump.

I would also move the intake up on your priority list. The Scotty III is a good choice, and you should take advantage of it. My stock truck's turbo was noticably faster in spool-up when I put the Ram Air III on. It definately increased it's driveability.

Thanks for the advice, I already have a straight pipe in place of the muffler. Also, does anyone recommend OFE over FE or vice versa for this setup? And more info on FASS or something similar would be appreciated

Revised list:
1)EGT gauge, maybe fuel pressure (already have boost)
2)Edge EZ
3)Intake of some sort, leaning towards Scotty RA3
4)Fuel system upgrade, FASS?
5)Piers Modified Turbo or G1 if I can get one
6)Don M EDM injectors in the ~70HP range
7)South Bend Clutch OFE or FE
8)Eventually B1 turbo or twins & maybe new Edge box
9)5" exhaust and possibly larger turbo downpipe

Thanks,

Nick

The piers turbo would do good with just the EZ but with the addition of injectors I would look into something bigger. B1, HTB2, HX 40. If you get a B1 or something simalar you can always use it as a top turbo as well.

I am going to get the B1-04 (a complete drop in turbo!) put the stocker on a jig, buy an HT3B, and fab up a B1/3b combo. then when I am done with the stocker its going on one of my snowmobiles.

Looks like a descent combination. Talk to Piers, he knows these trucks. As far as the clutch -- I forget which one I went with. It's a dual disc SouthBend -- seems like 3600, 6CB if I remember correctly. For recommendations, call Peter at SouthBend. He warranty's them, so tell him what your plans are and your power goals and let him pick your clutch. Seems to work well, especially if a warranty issue arises. Hope this helps!

Nick,

Here is how I did it in order. Start researching a new clutch, you will need it. I have the auto, so that was one of the first things I fixed after air intake, exhaust and Edge EZ.

You have the exhaust handled. And I wouldn't worry about a 5 inch until the twins are on.

First thing would be the air intake. If you are going turbo, injectors, fueling box etc... You might want to look at the AFE ProGuard 7 Kit, Torque Tube optional. You will need to move some air, the AFE might be the way to go over the Scotty with your particular mods.

Then the fueling box. I have the Edge EZ, works great. Even better stacked with the BullyDog Power Pup.

An EGT gauge is a must.

I would suggest doing turbo and injector upgrade at the same time, and throw in a ATS Exhaust Manifold with some good heavy gasket material. You will need this for EGT's if you go with a timing box down the road. 1400+ degrees is easy to hit, invest in the manifold. It will make the turbo install a bit easier too if you do it at the same time. Take a look at the BD Power Super "B" Turbo. It is a bolt on unit, and is a good way to go if you are looking at twins down the road. I have it and am very happy with the performance. Very quick to spool and egt's are very controllable. Easily handles 40+ psi at WOT. It comes with a warranty and is one of the less expensive turbos out there, around $1100. Quite a few guys are using it, all have nothing but good things to say so far. www.bd-power.com

If you are looking for injectors, give Jannety Racing a call, and ask for Chris. Their number is in the links section under perfomance. I paid $700 for my 80hp injectors, with a $700 corp deposit. They are flawless so far, and said to be closer to 90 in the hp department according to Jannety himself.

And I would be looking at a FASS or similar set up to push the fuel. I have the AirDog, real happy with it. It holds pressures nicely on the gauge cruising or at WOT. I have not had any fueling issues with it, and it even made the truck run much smoother. And get a fuel pressure gauge.

See my sig, it's all there. All of these parts lifts the front end off the ground enough to loose the steering.

That's my .02

Mike

Just curious, but why the AFE over Scotty RA3? Also, I was under the impression that the stock clutch would hold about an extra 100hp, so until I go past the Edge, I shouldn't need a clutch.

Revised list:
1)EGT gauge, fuel pressure gauge(already have boost)
2)Intake of some sort, leaning towards Scotty RA3
3)Edge EZ
4)Fuel system upgrade, FASS?
5)South Bend Clutch OFE or FE
6)B1 or BD turbo, one of the faster spooling ones
7)Don M EDM injectors in the ~70HP range
8)Eventually twins/ATS manifold & maybe new Edge box
9)5" exhaust and possibly larger turbo downpipe

I just ordered a SBC CON FE, the stock clutch lasted longer than I though and I did dyno it at 450 HP, and drove it everyday on 5/5 (377 HP).

Look at a B1-04 the B1KS are to restrictive and the B1-04 is the only single flowing charger with respectable flow/backpressure #'s on the HPCR engines.

If you run Don M's 40 HP EDM's (thats the highest HP he recomends with a duration box) and use the EZ for now I bet the 40 HP EDM's, EZ, and a good turbo would be an awesome 160-170 extra HP with the combo. (Diesel Dynamics are getting over 500 RWHP with an EZ and 100 HP honed injectors with an HX 40).
