How to reduce idle smoke?

since I got the head gasket done Ive had a lot more smoke at idle. .015 was shaved off and a .020 gasket was installed so Im guessing I lost a little compression which might explain the smoke.
I tried bumping the timing to 20 degrees and I got hard starts and more smoke. So its going back to 18 tonight.
Is there anything else I can do to limit idle fueling? Does the AFC act at this RPM with zero throttle? I would guess not after seeing the governor arm.
I wonder what a small amount of water / meth would do for this since you are effectively increasing compression.
